Chapter 10: The Wooden Whale

On Noah’s fifth birthday, Daniel presented him with a gift he had spent three months carving in the cottage’s workshop.

It was a detailed, six-inch wooden blue whale, carved from a piece of weathered driftwood they had found on the beach. Polished smooth with organic beeswax, the whale rested on a brass stand engraved with the words:

*To Noah — The boy who heard the truth in the dark.*

Noah cradled the wooden toy in his hands, running his fingers over the smooth curves of the driftwood grain.

""It feels like the beach,"" Noah whispered, his brown eyes shining with wonder.

""It came from the sea, just like our stories,"" Daniel said, kneeling beside his grandson’s bed as twilight fell over the cliffs. ""Whenever you feel afraid, or whenever you miss your mother, hold this whale and remember that love is like the ocean: you can't always see the bottom, but it holds you up no matter how deep the water gets.""

Noah tucked the wooden whale under his pillow, pulling the heavy quilt up to his chin.

""Sing me Mommy’s whale song, Grandpa,"" Noah murmured, his eyelids growing heavy.

Daniel, who had never sung a note in public in his sixty-two years, cleared his throat. In a low, gentle baritone, he sang the simple coastal lullaby Sarah had composed years ago:

> *""The tide goes out, the tide comes home,* > *Across the deep and silver foam.* > *Rest your head and close your eyes,* > *Love is the star that never dies.""*

By the second verse, Noah was fast asleep, his face peaceful and unburdened in the soft glow of the moon.
