Chapter 3: The Ghost’s Voice

Daniel clicked the first audio file.
The tinny sound of an incoming phone call filled the quiet room, followed by the unmistakable, rich voice of his late daughter, Sarah:
> *""Victoria, I have the forensic banking manifests from the Cayman accounts. You didn't just mismanage the foundation’s medical supply fund; you diverted eight million dollars into your brother’s shell company. If this money isn't returned by Friday, I'm taking this directly to Dad and the SEC.""*
A second voice followed—cold, venomous, and devoid of the sweet affection Victoria had displayed for the past year:
> *""Sarah, you don't understand how the game is played. Your father is an old man obsessed with legacy. If you expose this, the Sterling Foundation collapses under a federal investigation. We can fix this quietly.""*
> *""I'm not fixing fraud, Victoria. I'm driving down to the estate tonight. Dad needs to know who he actually invited into our home.""*
> *""You won't make it to the estate, Sarah.""*
The recording cut off with the sound of a harsh click.
The room fell into an abyss of absolute silence.
Daniel sat back in his high-backed leather chair, the breath knocked completely out of his lungs. The color drained from his weathered face, leaving him looking twenty years older.
For eighteen months, he had blamed himself for Sarah’s death. He had believed she was speeding through the fog because she was exhausted from foundation work. He had allowed Victoria to console him, to wipe his tears, to move into their ancestral home under the guise of protecting Noah.

He had placed his wedding ring on the finger of his daughter’s executioner.
