Chapter 7: The Ledger of Grace

Over the next six months, Daniel systematically dismantled his corporate obligations.
He stepped down as Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Global Logistics, transferring operational control to a trusted board of directors. He retained only the chairmanship of the *Sarah Sterling Memorial Foundation*, transforming it from a high-society charity vehicle into a grassroots humanitarian trust.
Every cent stolen by Victoria’s network was recovered and redirected into building coastal community clinics, funding independent forensic legal aid for domestic crime victims, and establishing an endowment for child trauma recovery.
Sitting on the porch of the Big Sur cottage, Daniel worked with a simple laptop, reviewing grant proposals.
Noah sat beside him on a wooden bench, carefully using watercolor paints to paint a large sea turtle on textured paper.
""Grandpa,"" Noah said, looking up with green paint on his nose. ""Is Mommy happy that we live by the water now?""
Daniel set his laptop aside. He knelt beside the boy, taking a wet towel to gently wipe the paint from his cheek.
""Your mommy loved this water more than any place in the world, Noah,"" Daniel said softly. ""Every time you hear the waves against the rocks, that’s her reminding you that you are safe, you are brave, and you are loved.""
Noah smiled, throwing his arms around Daniel’s neck. ""You're brave too, Grandpa.""

Daniel held his grandson tightly against his chest, the rough wool of his sweater absorbing the warmth of the young boy's embrace.
