Chapter 6: The Coastal Return

Three days later, Daniel packed two leather duffel bags and left the grand Sterling estate in the city.

He drove north along the winding Pacific Coast Highway, the ocean breeze carrying the scent of salt spray and eucalyptus. Beside him in the passenger seat, Noah looked out the window, watching the sea otters playing in the kelp beds.

They pulled into the driveway of a single-story cedarwood cottage perched on the cliffs of Big Sur—the very house where Sarah had spent her childhood summers, away from the rigid formalities of high-society life.

The cottage was weathered by the sea air, its wrap-around porch surrounded by wild coastal lupines and blooming sea lavender.

Daniel unlocked the front door. The house smelled of dry pine, old paperbacks, and the faint, comforting memory of Sarah’s lavender soap.

Noah ran across the wooden floorboards straight to the sunroom, climbing onto an old window seat overlooking the crashing waves below.

""Look, Grandpa!"" Noah pointed toward the horizon with a wide, bright smile. ""The blue whales!""

Daniel walked over, resting his hand gently on the windowpane. In the distance, plumes of white sea spray caught the afternoon sunlight as a pod of migrating whales glided peacefully through the deep water.

A tear slipped from Daniel’s eye, warm and unburdened. For the first time in eighteen months, the suffocating knot in his chest loosened, replaced by the profound, eternal presence of his daughter’s memory.
