Chapter 2: The Severed Lineage

Julian did not ascend the grand spiral staircase.

Instead, he knelt on the cold marble, balancing little Clara safely in his left arm, and extended his right hand toward the twins.

Leo, the older by four minutes, hesitated for a second before reaching out his small, warm hand and touching Julian’s palm. The boy looked from Julian’s face to the sleeping baby, his voice a tiny whisper. ""Is she our sister?""

""She is, Leo,"" Julian whispered back, his throat tightening with an overwhelming wave of grief and fierce paternal love. ""Her name is Clara. And I'm your father. I'm so sorry it took me so long to find you.""

Noah leaned against Maya’s leg, his thumb in his mouth, watching Julian’s face with quiet wonder.

Evelyn Sterling hurried down the grand stairs, the rustle of her heavy silk gown echoing like dry leaves. Her manicured hands reached out toward Julian, her face a performance of maternal distress.

""Julian, darling, listen to reason,"" Evelyn pleaded, lowering her voice as she approached. ""She was a common music student. You were the heir to an international shipping trust. We did what was necessary to protect your focus during your international corporate fellowship. We paid her hospital bills!""

""You didn't pay anything, Evelyn,"" Maya interjected, stepping forward with head held high. ""I worked double shifts at the conservatory library while carrying twins. I took out student loans to pay for their delivery. You offered me half a million dollars to abort them, and when I threw the check back in your face, you told the city housing authority that I was an unfit squatter.""

Julian stood up slowly. Standing at his full height of six-foot-two, his presence completely eclipsed his mother.

""Where are the letters, Mother?"" Julian asked.

""Julian—""

""Where are the letters she wrote to me?"" he demanded, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying rumble that caused the butler standing by the foyer doors to look away in shame.

Evelyn swallowed hard, unable to meet her son's eyes.

Julian reached into his jacket, pulled out his platinum corporate signet ring, his master security keys to the Sterling global headquarters, and his family estate pass. He dropped them onto the white marble floor at his mother’s feet.

They hit the stone with sharp, metallic clinks that sounded like gunshots in the vast hall.

""Julian, what are you doing?"" Arthur shouted from the balcony, his voice cracking with sudden panic. ""You hold fifty-one percent of the voting proxy for the transatlantic merger tomorrow!""

""Vote with the wind, Father,"" Julian replied, not bothering to look back.

He took Maya’s hand in his, linking his fingers through hers, while Leo and Noah held onto his jacket hem.

Together, the family of five turned their backs on the grand foyer and walked out through the massive mahogany doors into the bright, clean morning sun.
