Chapter 11: The Threshold of Grace

Julian looked at his mother for a long, quiet moment.

In his mind flashed the memories of the cold ballroom, the forged rejections, the four stolen years of his sons' infancy. The impulse to close the gate and lock the past outside was powerful and instinctive.

Then, the cottage door opened.

Maya stepped onto the porch, wrapped in a warm wool shawl. She looked at Evelyn standing in the fog, then walked down the path and stood beside Julian.

Maya looked into the eyes of the woman who had tried to buy her children’s lives with half a million dollars.

In Evelyn’s eyes, Maya saw no remaining arrogance, only the devastating ruin of a woman who had realized that all her wealth could not buy five minutes of genuine love.

Maya reached out, unlocked the brass latch of the wooden gate, and pushed it open.

""The tea is hot, Mrs. Sterling,"" Maya said gently. ""Come inside out of the cold.""

Evelyn looked at Maya in utter disbelief, her lips trembling, unable to comprehend the mercy being offered to her.

Julian looked at his wife, saw the boundless grace in her eyes, and stepped forward to take his mother’s frail arm, guiding her up the wooden steps into the warmth of their home.
