Chapter 1: The Shadow on the Balcony

The silence inside the grand foyer of the Sterling estate was colder than the polished white Carrara marble beneath their feet.

Four stories above, suspended from the domed ceiling, a multi-tiered crystal chandelier threw fractured splinters of light across the curved second-floor mezzanine. Standing behind the stone balustrade like statues of antique gods was the entire Sterling lineage: Julian’s father, Arthur Sterling, dressed in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit; his mother, Evelyn, clad in severe black silk; and his two elder siblings, their faces drawn into pale masks of shock and calculating dread.

On the ground floor, the world had collapsed into a triangle of raw, exposed truth.

Maya stood protectively before her twin four-year-old boys, Leo and Noah. Her long blonde hair fell in loose waves over the shoulders of a simple white tailored dress. Her hands rested firmly on the shoulders of her sons, but her knuckles were white, her chest rising and falling with shallow, guarded breaths.

Opposite her stood Julian.

He wore an all-black suit, untied at the collar, his dark wavy hair disheveled from transatlantic travel. Cradled gently against his left chest in a soft white blanket was his three-month-old daughter, Clara—sleeping peacefully, completely oblivious to the war surrounding her. In his right hand, Julian gripped the handle of a scuffed silver suitcase.

""Don't touch me,"" Maya had whispered, her voice carrying a four-year-old ache that cut deeper than any blade. ""You made your choice four years ago.""

""I never received your letters, Maya,"" Julian spoke again, stepping closer, his voice dropping into a register of desperate sincerity. ""I spent four years in Geneva believing you took the settlement and walked away because you never wanted this life. Why didn't you tell me you were pregnant with our sons?""

Maya looked up, tears finally spilling over her lashes, tracing hot paths down her cheeks. ""I stood at those iron gates while the snow was falling, Julian! I handed six handwritten letters to your mother. She looked me in the eye and said you had signed a power of attorney ordering security to arrest me if I ever stepped on this property again.""

Julian slowly turned his gaze upward toward the mezzanine.

His eyes, once filled with the deference of an obedient son, hardened into obsidian.

""They lied to both of us,"" Julian said, loud enough to ring off the domed ceiling.

Arthur Sterling stepped forward to the edge of the balustrade, resting his heavy, liver-spotted hands on the cold stone. ""Julian. You are making a scene in front of the domestic staff. Bring that infant upstairs, send the woman away with a proper severance stipend, and let us handle this in the boardroom.""

Julian let out a dry, humorless laugh. He looked down at Leo and Noah, whose big green eyes looked up at him with innocent bewilderment, then looked back at his father.

May you like

""There is no boardroom anymore, Father,"" Julian said with chilling finality. ""No one separates us again.""
