Chapter 10: An Unannounced Visitor

On a quiet evening in late October, as the fog rolled in thick from the Atlantic, a solitary black town car pulled up to the gravel turnaround outside the cottage.

Julian was on the porch, stacking seasoned firewood for the coming winter storm. He paused, holding an oak log, watching the car door open.

An elderly woman stepped out into the damp chill.

It was Evelyn Sterling.

She was dressed in an expensive cashmere coat, but she carried no luggage, no entourage, and no air of aristocratic superiority. Her posture was stooped, her silver hair styled simply, her face lined with the deep, hollow loneliness of an abandoned monarch.

Julian set the log down slowly and walked down the steps to the front gate.

""Mother,"" Julian said, his voice neutral, devoid of both anger and warmth.

Evelyn stood on the other side of the wooden gate, her hands trembling inside her leather gloves. ""Julian... your father suffered a severe stroke two months ago. He cannot speak. The doctors say he has very little time left.""

Julian remained silent, the fog swirling between them.

""I didn't come to ask for your return to the business,"" Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking as tears formed in her aged eyes. ""There is no business left. We sold the shipping fleet to pay the regulatory fines. We are living in a small apartment in Boston.""

She looked past Julian toward the warm, yellow light shining through the cottage windows, where the faint sound of a violin melody drifted through the quiet night.

""I came because... I am an old woman who realized too late that she spent her entire life worshipping dust,"" Evelyn sobbed, lowering her head in deep, unvarnished shame. ""I don't expect you to forgive me. I just... I needed to see that you were happy. That I didn't destroy your soul along with my own.""
