Chapter 12: The Healing of Generations

Inside the living room, the fire crackled brightly against the stone hearth.

Evelyn sat on the edge of the sofa, holding a steaming ceramic mug with shaking hands.

Leo and Noah, now seven years old, came out of their bedroom in their pajamas, holding a wooden chessboard. They looked at the elderly woman with polite curiosity.

""This is your grandmother, boys,"" Julian said softly, sitting on the braided rug beside them.

Leo studied her face for a moment, then set the chessboard on the low table in front of her. ""Do you know how to play the knight, Grandma? Dad says the knight is the only piece that can jump over walls.""

A fresh tear rolled down Evelyn’s cheek, dropping onto her sleeve. She reached out a trembling, manicured finger and touched the carved wooden horse.

""I used to know, sweetheart,"" Evelyn whispered, her voice thick with emotion. ""Will you teach me again?""

""Sure,"" Noah smiled, sitting beside her on the sofa. ""It moves in an L-shape. Like this.""
