Chapter 9 - The Siege of City Hall

The convoy of federal SUVs screeched to a halt in front of the grandiose, limestone pillars of City Hall. Pedestrians scattered in terror as armed agents poured out of the vehicles, establishing a rigid perimeter around the historic municipal building. Flashbulbs from early-morning news crews immediately began to pop, capturing the chaotic spectacle.
Marcus stepped out of the lead vehicle, his hand resting casually near his utility belt as he surveyed the grand staircase. Agent Sterling flanked him, while Maya walked with cool, calculated composure between two federal handlers, her leather clipboard clutched like a shield.
"Remember, we secure the records room first before the IT department initiates a remote wipe," Sterling instructed into his lapel microphone as they mounted the wide marble steps.
The heavy oak doors of City Hall were flung open from the inside by a terrified security guard who immediately threw his hands up in surrender. "Federal warrant! Step away from the main console!" an agent shouted, rushing past the guard and into the vaulted lobby.
Maya led the strike team directly toward the private elevator bank reserved for executive staff. She swiped a stolen keycard she had retrieved during her morning assessment, bypassing the digital security lock with practiced ease.
"How did you get the executive access code?" Marcus asked, keeping watch on the rear corridor as the elevator doors slid open with a soft chime.
"City officials are creatures of habit," Maya replied, stepping inside and pressing the sub-basement button. "They use the same override PIN for their parking garages as they do for their confidential archives."
The elevator plunged downward, descending deep beneath the gleaming marble lobby into the subterranean vaults where the city's darkest financial secrets were physically stored. When the doors opened, the air was cold, smelling of ozone and old paper.
Agent Sterling unholstered his sidearm, signaling his team to fan out across the dimly lit rows of towering metal filing racks. But as they reached the central computer terminal, the monitor flickered violently, displaying a single line of flashing red text.
