Chapter 10 - The Digital Ghost

The glowing red text pulsed rhythmically on the terminal screen, casting an eerie crimson hue across the tense faces of the federal agents. Agent Sterling cursed under his breath, holstering his weapon and slamming his palm against the emergency server disconnect switch.

"It's looping through an offshore proxy," Sterling snapped, his fingers flying across the auxiliary keyboard in a desperate attempt to isolate the hard drives. "Someone inside the municipal network initiated a hard wipe the second our perimeter was established."

Maya didn't panic. She walked past the frantic federal agents, stepping directly up to the humming mainframe rack. She unzipped her camo shoulder bag, pulled out a specialized hardware bypass dongle, and slammed it directly into the master diagnostic port.

"They're scrubbing the cloud storage, but they forgot about the physical backup buffer," Maya said calmly, her eyes fixed on the rolling lines of green code appearing on her handheld tablet.

Marcus stood guard at the end of the narrow server aisle, his hand resting on his service weapon as he listened for any approaching footsteps from the maintenance stairwell. "How much time do we have before they lock us out entirely?"

"About forty seconds," Maya replied, her fingers dancing across the screen with astonishing speed. "I'm rerouting the data stream directly to the state attorney general's secure server."

Suddenly, the overhead fluorescent lights flickered and died, plunging the sub-basement into absolute darkness, save for the blinking red and green status lights of the computer hardware. Heavy metallic security shutters slammed down over the elevator doors with a deafening crash, sealing the vault from the outside world.

"We've been locked in," one of the federal agents shouted, sweeping his tactical flashlight across the sealed perimeter. "The automated fire suppression system is venting halon gas!"

A sharp, chemical hiss began to hiss from nozzles mounted in the ceiling, filling the enclosed server room with a dense, choking fog.
