Chapter 6 - The State’s Shadow

The squad room fell into a profound, suffocating silence. The only sound was the rhythmic clicking of the broken fax machine attempting to clear its rollers. Captain Thomas snatched the paper from the rookie's trembling hand, his eyes scanning the dense legal jargon with terrifying speed.
"This is impossible," Captain Thomas muttered, the color draining completely from his weathered face. "The state doesn't intervene in municipal zoning disputes unless there's an active criminal grand jury investigation."
"There is," a crisp, unfamiliar voice echoed from the entrance of the squad room.
All heads turned as Special Agent Vance Sterling of the State Bureau of Investigation walked through the double doors. He wore a sharply tailored charcoal suit that contrasted sharply with the rumpled police uniforms. Two armed federal agents flanked him, their expressions completely unreadable.
"Captain Thomas, I’m taking custody of Officer Miller and all related dispatch logs from the past forty-eight hours," Agent Sterling announced, flashing a titanium badge that commanded absolute obedience.
Sarah Miller suddenly stopped slouching in her chair. Her defiant smirk vanished, replaced by genuine, unadulterated terror. She lunged forward, nearly tipping the chair over. "You can't do this! I was following the continuity protocol! I was protecting the city's investments!"
"You were covering up structural fraud, Miller, and tampering with federal environmental monitors," Sterling stated coldly, motioning for his agents to step forward and unlock her handcuffs, replacing them with heavy-duty federal zip-ties.
Marcus watched the transfer with a stoic expression, though a knot of unease tightened in his stomach. He looked over at Maya, who was quietly sliding her blueprints back into her leather clipboard. The scope of this corruption was clearly far larger than a simple neighborhood profiling incident.
"Agent Sterling," Maya spoke up, her voice ringing clear across the silent room. "If the state is stepping in, you need to look at the secondary soil samples from the north ridge. The contamination isn't localized to Elmwood."
Sterling paused, turning his piercing gaze toward Maya. He walked over slowly, stopping just inches away. "How do you know about the north ridge, Ms. Vance? Those findings were sealed by a federal judge three hours ago."
May you like
Maya met his gaze without flinching, slowly opening her clipboard to reveal a blank, unsealed page. "Because I'm the one who buried the original truth before they wiped the city servers."
