Chapter 3 - The Digital Echo

The metal click of the handcuffs securing Sarah Miller’s wrists echoed strangely against the expensive brick facades of the suburban homes. Curtains twitched across the street as neighbors peered through blinds, witnessing a scene they never expected to unfold in their quiet sanctuary.
Maya closed her leather clipboard with a sharp snap, sliding it securely into her camo shoulder bag. She stepped back to give the two officers space, though her mind was racing. Marcus had acted swiftly, but the look in Sarah’s eyes wasn't just fear or anger—it was panic. Sarah genuinely believed she was protected by an invisible shield.
"You’re making a massive mistake, Marcus," Sarah warned through clenched teeth as she was guided toward the back of the patrol cruiser. "The captain is going to strip your badge by noon. You don't know what files I pulled this morning."
Marcus paused with his hand on the cruiser door, his expression hardening further. "Files regarding what, Miller? The Elmwood expansion zone?"
Sarah laughed, a harsh, humorless sound that rattled in the morning quiet. "Keep playing detective. Ask your precious city hall why foundation permits for this block were approved over toxic soil reports."
Before Marcus could press her further, the wail of an incoming secondary siren cut through the air. A second patrol car whipped around the corner, tires screeching as it braked hard twenty yards away. Officer David Brody leaped out of the driver's seat, his hand instantly dropping to his holster as he assessed the chaotic scene.
"What the hell is going on here?" Brody yelled, jogging toward them with wide eyes. "Marcus, step away from the cruiser. Miller, what happened?"
Marcus didn't flinch. He placed Sarah securely in the back seat, closed the heavy door with a definitive thud, and turned to face his rushing colleague.
"Officer Miller is being detained for official misconduct and civil rights violations," Marcus stated, stepping directly into Brody's path.

Brody stopped short, his face flushing a deep crimson as he stared at the rear window where Sarah was glaring out at them with a triumphant smirk.
