Chapter 11 - The Subterranean Vent

The chemical hiss of the halon gas grew deafening as it flooded the confined server vault, turning the air thick and difficult to breathe. Coughing erupted among the federal agents as they scrambled to pull their tactical respirators over their faces.

"Hold your breath! The manual override is on the east bulkhead!" Agent Sterling shouted through his mask, sweeping his flashlight beam across the metal wall.

Maya dropped to her knees, her eyes stinging from the descending gas, but her hands remained locked onto the hardware bypass dongle plugged into the mainframe. The progress bar on her tablet crawled forward: 98%... 99%...

"Get up, Maya! We have to move now!" Marcus yelled, fighting through the dense fog to grab her arm and yank her away from the console just as the screen flashed a brilliant, blinding green.

TRANSFER COMPLETE.

With a sharp yank, Maya snatched the dongle free from the port, tucking it safely into her leather clipboard as she gasped for breath. "The data is secure. The attorney general has the complete ledger."

"Move, move, move!" Sterling bellowed, firing his sidearm into the heavy mechanical locking mechanism of the utility hatch behind the server racks. The reinforced steel plate blew outward under the ballistic impact, revealing a dark, vertical maintenance ladder leading upward into the municipal steam tunnels.

One by one, the federal agents scrambled up the ladder into the stifling heat of the concrete tunnels. Marcus pushed Maya ahead of him, covering their rear as the heavy door of the main vault finally gave way under the pressure of the automated security lockdown.

As Marcus pulled himself up into the steam tunnel and kicked the hatch shut beneath them, a muffled voice echoed from the vault below.
