Chapter 7 - The Confession

The squad room seemed to shrink as Maya’s words settled over the gathered officers. Agent Sterling’s eyes narrowed, a razor-sharp assessment flickering behind his wire-rimmed glasses. He took a slow step back, signaling his agents to secure the perimeter doors.

"You're admitting to accessing restricted federal archives without authorization, Ms. Vance?" Sterling asked, his tone dropping into a dangerous, procedural interrogation cadence.

"I’m admitting to exposing a corporate homicide in slow motion," Maya corrected him, her voice entirely devoid of fear. She tapped the leather cover of her clipboard. "The developers of Elmwood Terrace didn't just cut corners on concrete mixes. They used toxic industrial slag from the old refinery downtown to save millions in hauling fees. Every foundation in that subdivision is a ticking time bomb."

Sarah Miller let out a hysterical laugh from where she was being held by the federal agents. "You think you're a hero, don't you? The city council approved those fills! The mayor himself signed off on the expedited waivers to bring in tech sector tax revenue!"

Captain Thomas slammed his fist down on a filing cabinet, the metallic crash echoing like a gunshot. "Shut your mouth, Miller! You're digging a grave you won't crawl out of."

"No, Captain, she's already at the bottom of it," Marcus interjected, stepping forward to stand beside Maya. He unclipped his service badge and laid it gently on the captain's desk. "If the department knew about the slag fills and used patrol units to harass inspectors, then this badge has been compromised."

Captain Thomas stared at the silver star resting on his desk like a live grenade. "Vance, don't be a fool. Pick that up. We handle our own internal affairs."

"You don't handle criminal conspiracies, Captain," Marcus replied, his jaw set in a rigid line. "You protect budgets."

Agent Sterling watched the exchange with clinical detachment, then reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a digital tablet, tapping the screen twice. A loud, encrypted audio file began to play through the squad room's intercom system.

"Listen closely," Sterling commanded.

The audio crackled with static, followed by the unmistakable voice of Mayor Harrison speaking on an open line: "If any inspector flags the north ridge runoff again, make sure they get a permanent escort away from the property. Use whatever municipal code enforcement tools necessary."
