Chapter 12 - The Steam Tunnels

The labyrinthine network of municipal steam tunnels stretched out before them in a suffocating maze of dripping pipes, hissing valves, and flickering emergency lights. The air was stiflingly hot, carrying the metallic scent of rust and boiling water.

Agent Sterling wiped sweat from his brow, consulting a ruggedized tactical map illuminated by the beam of his flashlight. "If we take the primary junction north, it leads right into the old subway maintenance depot. We can surface two blocks away from City Hall."

"Assuming the exit hasn't been sealed off like the vault," Maya noted, coughing slightly as she adjusted the strap of her camo shoulder bag. She clutched her leather clipboard tightly against her chest, ensuring the physical backups inside remained completely dry.

Marcus kept his service weapon drawn, scanning the deep shadows cast by the massive industrial pipes overhead. "They knew we were coming down to the sub-basement. That means there's a leak inside the state bureau or the attorney general's office."

Sterling’s expression hardened at the accusation, but he didn't deny it. "Let's worry about surviving the next ten minutes before we audit the chain of command, Vance."

Suddenly, the heavy metallic sound of echoing boots ricocheted down the concrete corridor behind them. Shouts bounced off the curved walls, multiplying until it sounded like a small army was closing in on their position.

"They've cut off our retreat," a federal agent whispered, clicking the safety off his rifle. "We're trapped in a dead-end conduit."

Maya swept her flashlight beam along the damp brick wall to their left, noticing a rusted iron access grate half-hidden behind a thick cluster of insulated water pipes. She stepped closer, brushing away decades of grime to reveal stenciled lettering painted on the brickwork.
