Chapter 14 - The Final Boardroom

The heavy oak doors of the state attorney general’s grand conference room swung open, revealing a tense gathering of state prosecutors, environmental investigators, and federal officials. Maya Vance walked to the head of the long mahogany table, placing her leather clipboard squarely in the center.

Across the room, Mayor Harrison sat flanked by two high-priced defense attorneys, his face flushed with a mixture of arrogant defiance and suppressed panic. Sarah Miller and Captain Thomas sat at a separate table near the back, stripped of their badges and awaiting formal arraignment.

"The digital ledger recovered from the municipal sub-basement conclusively links the executive office to the systemic approval of toxic industrial fill across four major suburban developments," Maya announced, her voice ringing out with absolute clarity.

The special prosecutor stood up, examining the data drive connected to the main projector. Graphs, soil toxicity reports, and recorded phone transcripts immediately filled the large screen on the wall, illuminating the entire corrupt enterprise in irrefutable detail.

Mayor Harrison’s attorneys frantically whispered in his ear, but the mayor simply stared at the screen, realizing the game was over. The concrete foundation he had built his political career upon had finally crumbled beneath him.

"This evidence is inadmissible," one defense attorney sputtered, standing up and waving his hands. "It was obtained during an unauthorized breach of municipal infrastructure!"

"It was obtained under emergency public safety protocols by licensed municipal engineers and sworn federal agents," Agent Sterling countered coldly, stepping forward with a stack of signed arrest warrants.

Marcus stood by the doorway, his arms crossed over his chest, watching the machinery of justice finally catch up to the untouchable elite. He caught Maya's eye across the room; she offered a subtle, knowing nod, acknowledging the perilous journey they had survived together.

The special prosecutor cleared his throat, picking up a pen as he looked directly at the disgraced mayor. "Mr. Harrison, you are being formally charged with racketeering, environmental endangerment, and obstruction of justice."
