Chapter 9 - The Legal Trap

Marcus Thorne stepped fully into the bright fluorescent light of the server room, his expensive leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the concrete floor. Eleanor Vance stared at him, her chest heaving as the desperate realization that her entire inner circle had disintegrated washed over her.
"Marcus, you swore you'd stay out of the country until the statute of limitations expired," Eleanor hissed, her voice trembling with restrained fury.
"Circumstances change, Eleanor, especially when a federal audit is triggered by the rightful heir," Marcus replied smoothly, turning his smartphone screen toward Clara to display a live-streaming video feed. "Everything you've said tonight in this room is currently being recorded and transmitted directly to the United States Attorney's Office."
Clara watched the screen, her eyes locking onto the live data packets transmitting through the secure federal portal. "You planned this, Marcus. You helped her steal the company ten years ago, and now you're cutting her loose to save your own skin."
"Business is ruthless, Ms. Sterling, but I am simply a pragmatist," Marcus said, offering a polite, chilling nod of acknowledgment. "I have the complete paper trail proving that Eleanor forged your father's signature on the asset transfer deeds, and I am willing to hand it over in exchange for full federal immunity."
Eleanor let out a sharp, choked sound of disbelief, lunging forward with her fingernails bared toward Marcus's face. "You miserable, double-crossing coward!" she shrieked, all of her polished socialite composure completely shattering into pieces.
Martha stepped in instantly, catching Eleanor's wrists with surprising strength and pinning her arms firmly to her sides before she could reach the lawyer.
"Save your breath for the federal judge, Eleanor; your reign of terror in this building is officially over," Martha said coldly, holding the struggling woman in place.
Clara walked over to Marcus, extending her hand for the briefcase he held. "Hand over the physical files, Marcus, and your immunity deal might just survive my review."
Marcus hesitated for a fraction of a second, weighing his options before unlatching the brass clasps of the briefcase and handing it over to the young heir. Clara flipped open the leather case, revealing rows of signed confessions, banking routing numbers, and original trust certificates bearing her grandfather's authentic signature.
"This is everything," Clara whispered, running her fingers over the crisp paper.
