Chapter 7 - The Ambush at the Server Farm

The sharp, metallic chime of the elevator echoed through the penthouse office like a gunshot, freezing all three occupants in their tracks. David Miller turned pale, pressing his back hard against the wood-paneled wall as if he could melt right into the timber.
"Nobody was scheduled to come up on this car for another three hours," Martha whispered urgently, her hand instinctively slipping toward the panic button hidden beneath the edge of the desk.
"It’s not an elevator from the lobby; someone just overrode the security lock from the basement maintenance shaft," Clara stated, her eyes fixed on the indicator lights above the doors.
The digital display flickered, showing the car descending rapidly toward the subterranean lower levels where the primary corporate servers were housed. Clara didn't hesitate; she grabbed the leather-bound ledger, slipped the flash drive into her front pocket, and headed straight for the private stairwell door tucked behind the bookshelves.
"Follow me, quietly," Clara ordered, pulling open the heavy fire door.
Martha and a hesitant David trailed closely behind her as they descended the concrete spiral staircase into the cool, dimly lit underbelly of the hotel. The air down here smelled of ozone, copper, and damp concrete, far removed from the crystal chandeliers and polished marble of the upper floors. As they approached the heavy steel door of the master server room, they heard muffled voices echoing down the narrow hallway.
"I don't care how you do it, just wipe the primary hard drives clean before the morning board meeting," a sharp, familiar voice demanded.
It was Eleanor Vance, speaking in a low, furious hiss to someone standing just inside the server room. Clara motioned for Martha and David to stay back against the concrete wall as she crept forward, peering cautiously around the heavy steel doorframe. Inside the brightly lit room, Eleanor stood beside a technician who was rapidly typing commands into the central mainframe console, while a stack of burning financial folders smoldered inside a metal trash can.
"The main firewall is resisting the purge, Mrs. Vance; we need the master hardware key to override the root directory," the technician reported nervously, sweat dripping down his nose.
"Use the emergency bypass code from the executive ledger," Eleanor snapped, crossing her arms impatiently.
May you like
Clara stepped fully into the doorway, her boots clicking sharply against the cold concrete floor. "You'll find that the executive ledger is currently unavailable, Eleanor."
