Chapter 8 - A Clash of Legacies

Eleanor Vance spun around so fast she nearly tripped over her own white designer heels, her face twisting into an expression of sheer, unadulterated venom. The technician froze mid-keystroke, his fingers hovering anxiously over the illuminated keyboard as the blue light cast harsh shadows across his face.
"You," Eleanor hissed, her voice dripping with pure malice as she took a slow step toward the doorway. "How did a common street rat like you manage to bypass the penthouse security protocols?"
"This building, these servers, and every single brick of this foundation belong to my family, Eleanor. You are the intruder here," Clara replied, her voice steady and echoing off the concrete walls.
"You think a battered old locket and a couple of forged documents give you ownership of a multi-million-dollar empire?" Eleanor laughed harshly, though a bead of nervous sweat trickled down her immaculate makeup. "The board of directors answers to me, the banks answer to me, and by tomorrow morning, you won't even exist on paper."
"Try executing that final purge command and see what happens to your freedom," Clara countered smoothly, stepping further into the room while Martha and David flanked her left and right.
Eleanor’s eyes darted to David standing in the shadows, and a look of profound betrayal flashed across her features. "You traitorous little rat, I made your career," she snarled at David.
"You were going to throw me under the bus for your federal crimes, Eleanor, I just chose the winning side," David retorted defensively, shrinking slightly behind Martha's solid frame.
"There are no winning sides left for you, David, or for any of you," a deep, authoritative voice boomed from the dark hallway behind them.
Everyone spun around as Marcus Thorne, the former chief legal counsel who had allegedly retired to the Cayman Islands, stepped out of the shadows into the harsh fluorescent light of the server room. He was wearing an expensive gray tweed suit, holding a leather briefcase in one hand and a smartphone recording video in the other.
"Marcus," Eleanor gasped, her face turning completely white. "What are you doing back in the city?"
"I'm here to collect my portion of the settlement, Eleanor, before you sink the ship entirely," Marcus replied with a cold, calculating smile.

Clara looked between Marcus and Eleanor, her heart hammering against her ribs as the true scale of the conspiracy finally laid itself bare before her eyes.
