Chapter 13 - The Federal Sweep

"Federal Law Enforcement! Nobody move an inch!" the lead marshal shouted, his voice cutting cleanly through the howling wind and pouring rain as the bright beams of tactical flashlights swept across the rooftop helipad.

Marcus Thorne immediately dropped to his knees, lacing his fingers behind his head with practiced compliance. "I am cooperating fully with the United States Attorney's Office, agent! My badge and identification are in my breast pocket!" he yelled over the storm.

The lead marshal nodded to two officers, who rushed forward to secure Marcus and slap heavy plastic zip-ties around his wrists. Arthur Sterling stood tall, shielding Clara slightly behind his shoulder while keeping his hands raised calmly in the air.

"Agent Miller, FBI Financial Crimes Division," the lead officer identified himself, stepping forward with his badge held up against the rain. "We received an encrypted data transfer from a secure terminal inside this building moments ago. Which one of you initiated the uplink?"

Clara stepped out from behind her father, her dark eyes flashing with fierce determination. "I did, Agent Miller. My name is Clara Sterling, and I am the primary legal heir to this entire corporate entity."

The agent lowered his weapon slightly, his eyes darting between Clara, Arthur, and the open leather briefcase resting on the wet concrete. "We've been tracking a multi-million-dollar asset laundering scheme tied to Eleanor Vance and her associates for over a year, Ms. Sterling. We have a warrant to seize all corporate assets and arrest every co-conspirator involved in the 2014 hostile takeover."

"You'll find all the signed confessions, forged bank transfers, and original trust deeds right inside that briefcase," Clara instructed, pointing down to the leather case at her feet.

An agent immediately knelt down, scooped up the briefcase, and flipped it open to inspect the documents under his flashlight beam. "This is the missing primary ledger," the agent confirmed into his shoulder radio. "We have the complete paper trail. Move in and secure the lobby and executive suites immediately."

Inside the building, downstairs in the server room and lobby, the muffled sounds of federal agents securing the premises echoed upward through the ventilation shafts. Arthur looked down at his daughter with an expression of profound pride and lingering disbelief.

"You beat them at their own game, Clara," Arthur murmured, pulling her close into a protective side-hug against the storm.

"We beat them together, Dad," Clara replied, her fingers instinctively reaching into her pocket to touch the cool, safe metal of her silver locket.
