Chapter 14 - The Final Reckoning

Eleanor Vance thrashed wildly against the federal marshals, her white designer dress ruined by mud and rainwater, her hair matted against her furious, pale face. "You cannot do this to me! I am the board president! I am the face of this enterprise!" she shrieked, struggling fiercely as they forced her toward the waiting elevator.
She caught sight of Arthur and Clara standing together near the edge of the helipad, and her eyes widened in pure, unadulterated shock.
"You... you're supposed to still be locked away!" Eleanor screamed, pointing a shaking finger at Arthur before the marshals shoved her forcibly inside the elevator car.
"Your reign of theft and cruelty is officially over, Eleanor," Arthur said calmly, stepping forward to watch the doors close on the defeated woman.
The elevator descended into the depths of the hotel, taking the last remnants of the corrupt regime down with it. The storm clouds above began to break, parting just enough for a pale, golden beam of morning sunlight to pierce through the heavy mist, illuminating the Manhattan skyline in a brilliant, breathtaking display of dawn. Clara walked over to the edge of the helipad, looking down at the grand entrance where police cruisers and federal vans were flashing their red and blue lights against the polished stone facade. Martha and David walked out onto the roof together, Martha looking serene and victorious, while David kept his head bowed in quiet shame.
"What happens to the staff, Clara?" Martha asked quietly, joining the young heir at the railing.
"Anyone who participated in the forgery and the cover-up faces prosecution, but the frontline staff who were just following orders out of fear will be retained and given full back pay," Clara decided firmly, her voice carrying the unmistakable weight of leadership.
Arthur placed a warm hand on his daughter's shoulder, smiling softly. "Your grandfather would have been profoundly proud of you, Clara. You saved the soul of this family."
Clara pulled the silver locket from her pocket, popping the casing open to reveal the sepia-toned portrait of her ancestors smiling back at her in the morning light. She snapped it shut with a satisfying click, feeling a deep, lasting peace settle into her bones after years of endless shadows.
"We have a lot of work to do, Dad," Clara said, turning away from the railing toward the penthouse doors.

Before they took their first step off the roof, Marcus Thorne called out from where he was being held by the marshals, shouting a final, desperate warning.
