Chapter 6 - Confessions in the Dark

David Miller slumped further onto the Persian rug, his hands trembling as he wiped the sweat from his forehead with the cuff of his white dress shirt. The silence in the penthouse office was suffocating, broken only by the low hum of the centralized air conditioning system.

"I wasn't here the night your father was forced out, Ms. Sterling, but I found the internal incident logs in the basement archives last year," David confessed, his voice barely rising above a panicked whisper.

"Go on," Clara commanded, leaning against the edge of the mahogany desk with her arms crossed tightly over her chest.

"Eleanor didn't just forge the financial documents; she staged a corporate coup using fabricated health violations to strip your father of his voting rights," David explained, pulling a folded flash drive from his breast pocket and sliding it timidly across the rug. "Everything is on here—audio recordings, bank statements, and the original board minutes that were supposed to be destroyed."

Martha stepped forward, picked up the flash drive with two fingers as if it were venomous, and plugged it directly into the side port of the secure terminal on the desk. A series of encrypted files immediately populated the monitor screen, glowing with an eerie blue light in the dim room.

"It's all here, Clara," Martha confirmed after clicking through a series of encrypted audio files. "Every single illegal maneuver, signed by Eleanor's own hand."

Clara felt a cold wave of vindication wash over her, but the underlying grief of her father's lost years still burned fiercely in her chest. She looked down at David, who was still kneeling on the floor, waiting for his sentence.

"Why are you turning on her now, David? You were her most enthusiastic executioner down in that lobby just an hour ago," Clara asked, narrowing her eyes.

"Because I found out last night that Eleanor is planning to liquidate the entire holding company and flee the country by Friday morning," David blurted out, desperate to save his own skin. "She was going to leave all of us holding the bag for her federal wire fraud charges."

Martha’s expression hardened instantly. "If she liquidates the primary accounts by Friday, the entire corporation will go into receivership before we can legally assert ownership of the assets."

Clara straightened up, her jaw set with unwavering resolve. "We don't have until Friday, Martha. We need to lock down the master server room within the next hour."

David scrambled to his feet, eager to prove his newfound loyalty. "I have the security override codes for the basement server farm, I can get you past the biometric scanners without raising any alarms."

Clara stared at him for a long moment, weighing the risk of trusting a coward against the necessity of speed. Before she could give an order, the private elevator chime rang out with a sharp, unexpected ding.
