Chapter 11 - The Vent of Truth

Martha unlocked a heavy, rusted metal panel set low into the concrete wall behind the main server racks, revealing a dark, cramped ventilation shaft that sloped sharply upward into the bowels of the building. The cool air rushing out of the opening smelled of dust, old iron, and rain.

"Single file, keep your heads down, and don't look back," Martha instructed, switching on a heavy-duty flashlight and crawling into the narrow dark space first.

Clara didn't hesitate, diving into the tunnel right behind Martha with the leather briefcase clutched tightly to her chest. Marcus and David scrambled in after them, leaving Eleanor Vance standing alone in the center of the amber-lit server room as the automated fire suppression system began to hiss ominously overhead.

"Wait, you can't leave me locked in here!" Eleanor shrieked, hammering her fists against the sealed steel door.

Nobody answered her cries. They crawled through the twisting metal labyrinth for what felt like hours, the metallic scraping of their knees echoing loudly in the enclosed space until their muscles burned with exhaustion. Finally, Martha reached the end of the shaft, pushing open a heavy wooden floor grate that popped loose with a sharp crack. Cool, fresh night air flooded their lungs as Martha hoisted herself up into a dimly lit utility room directly beneath the roof access tower. Clara crawled out right behind her, brushing the dust and soot off her gray tank top and blue jeans as she caught her breath.

"We made it," David wheezed, collapsing onto the concrete floor of the utility room with his chest heaving.

"Get up, David, we aren't done yet," Clara commanded, stepping over him toward the heavy glass door that led out onto the open-air rooftop helipad.

Through the thick glass panels, they could see the glowing neon lights of the Manhattan skyline stretching out endlessly into the stormy night sky. But it wasn't the view that made Clara freeze in her tracks; it was the silhouette of a tall man standing near the edge of the roof, holding a satellite uplink briefcase identical to the one in her hands.

"Arthur Sterling," Marcus gasped, stumbling out of the ventilation shaft and staring at the figure in absolute shock.

Clara's breath caught in her throat as the man slowly turned around to face them, revealing a face she thought she would never see again in this lifetime.
