Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Secrets

The pages of the heavy leather-bound ledger rustled softly in the quiet penthouse office, yellowed with age and filled with meticulous handwriting detailing the empire's true origins. Clara scanned the financial entries from twenty years ago, her eyes narrowing as she spotted a series of unauthorized stock transfers executed right around the time of her family's sudden exile.
"Look at this, Martha," Clara pointed to a specific transaction code marked with a faded red ink stamp. "Eleanor didn't just push us out; she systematically drained the philanthropic trust funds to finance her personal real estate portfolio."
Martha leaned over the mahogany desk, adjusting her glasses to examine the signature at the bottom of the transfer order. "That's Marcus Thorne's signature, the former chief legal counsel who mysteriously retired to the Cayman Islands the same week your father passed away."
"So Eleanor didn't act alone; she had a whole syndicate of corporate thieves helping her strip the company from the inside out," Clara said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
"Marcus is still alive, and he still controls several shell corporations registered right here in New York," Martha revealed, her expression grave.
Before Clara could respond, a sharp, insistent knocking echoed against the heavy oak doors of the penthouse office. Martha walked over and unlatched the heavy brass lock, pulling the door open just enough to reveal the shivering male manager from the lobby, his navy suit now looking crumpled and sweat-stained.
"Martha, please, you have to let me speak with Ms. Sterling, I have information that can help her," the man pleaded, his voice cracking with desperation.
Clara did not look up from the ledger. "Let him in, Martha. Let's hear what kind of excuses a loyal lapdog has to offer."
The manager stumbled into the room, hastily closing the heavy door behind him before sinking to his knees on the Persian rug. "My name is David Miller, and I was just following orders handed down directly by Eleanor's personal assistant," he babbled, sweat beading on his forehead.
"Orders to throw legitimate heirs out onto the street like trash?" Clara asked coldly, finally looking up from the desk to fix her piercing gaze on him.
"Orders to keep anyone wearing silver jewelry away from the executive floors at all costs," David blurted out, trembling violently.
Clara stood up slowly, towering over the panicked man as the afternoon sun cast long, dramatic shadows across the opulent room. "Tell me everything you know about the night my father was locked out of this building, or I will personally throw you into a federal prison cell before sundown."

David swallowed hard, his eyes wide with absolute terror as he realized his entire career and freedom hung by a thread.
