Chapter 8 - The Offshore Trail

The chime from the laptop screen hung in the air like a final, echoing bell. The progress bar had vanished, replaced by a green checkmark and the bold text: Transfer Successful - $450,000 USD Transferred.
Elena stared at the screen for a second, her hands gripping the straps of her heavy leather tote bag so tightly her knuckles turned stark white. Then, a slow, defiant smile crept back onto her lips. She tossed her blonde hair over her shoulder and took a confident step toward the doorway where Mark stood blocking her escape.
"Four hundred and fifty thousand dollars," Elena said, her voice dripping with arrogant satisfaction. "That’s barely a rounding error in your corporate portfolio, Mark. By the time your lawyers manage to untangle the international jurisdiction laws and trace those funds through my brother’s LLC, I’ll be sitting on a beach in Costa Rica sipping cocktails with someone who actually knows how to treat a woman."
She tried to push past Mark’s shoulder, shifting her weight to slip through the narrow gap between his tall frame and the oak doorframe. But Mark didn't budge an inch. He stood like a monolith in his dark blue button-down shirt, his muscles locked tight, his gaze fixed on her with a cold, unyielding gravity.
"You didn't listen to what I said, Elena," Mark replied, his voice barely above a whisper, yet it carried an absolute authority that stopped her in her tracks. "Your brother’s LLC isn't registered in Delaware anymore. Three weeks ago, after my first auditor red-flagged an anomaly in our joint tax filings, I had my legal team move all secondary corporate holdings under a federal asset freeze order. Every account tied to that tax ID was flagged for automated seizure the moment a wire transfer of over ten thousand dollars was initiated."
Elena’s confident smirk evaporated instantly. Her eyes widened in genuine horror as she dropped her leather tote bag, the heavy thud shaking the floorboards as binders and passport booklets spilled out across the Persian rug.
"You're lying," Elena stammered, her voice cracking for the first time. She lunged forward toward the laptop, her fingers flying across the trackpad as she frantically tried to refresh the banking portal page.
The screen flickered, the green checkmark disappearing, replaced instantly by a glaring red warning banner: Account Frozen - Federal Asset Protection Directive 404-B. All funds sequestered pending judicial review.
Elena froze, staring at the glowing monitor as the reality of her ruined escape crashed down around her. She spun around to face Mark, her face twisting into an ugly mask of raw, unfiltered fury.
"You set me up!" Elena screamed, her voice cracking as she finally lost all control, abandoning her composed demeanor entirely. "You knew I was going to take the money! You planned this whole thing!"
"No, Elena," Maya spoke up from beside her father, her voice steady and chillingly calm as she looked down at the woman who had tormented her for months. "You set yourself up. You thought you were the smartest person in every room, but you left your digital footprint everywhere. Just like you left it on the security cameras."
Elena let out a high-pitched, frantic sound of pure rage, her hands balling into fists as she took a menacing step toward Maya. But before she could close the distance, Mark stepped forward, his hand shooting out to grip her wrist with an ironclad, unbreakable hold.
"The police are already on their way," Mark said, his voice hard as granite. "And they'll have every single file from that security drive waiting for them when they arrive."
May you like
Elena wrenched her arm free, glaring at both of them with sheer hatred before her eyes darted frantically toward the open window overlooking the driveway, where the flashing red and blue lights of an incoming cruiser suddenly illuminated the bedroom ceiling.
