Chapter 5 - The Master PIN

The digital chime of the unlocked directory echoed through the bright living room like a small, hollow bell. Mark stood frozen in his dark blue shirt and beige pants, his thumb hovering inches above the ominous red folder labeled 'Guest Log.' The air felt thick, charged with an invisible static that made the hairs on the back of his arms stand up.

Maya stood right beside him, her dark hair casting a shadow across her tense face as she stared intently at the glowing screen.

"Dad, don't open it," Maya whispered, her voice tight with a sudden, overwhelming intuition of dread. "Whatever she thinks is in there... it’s just another one of her games. She’s trying to make you doubt everything so you won't kick her out."

Mark didn't respond. His eyes were locked on the file size indicator next to the red folder: 412 GB. That was an astronomical amount of data for simple home security clips. It represented weeks, perhaps months, of continuous recording from angles that standard security setups rarely captured.

With a slow, reluctant motion, Mark pressed his index finger directly onto the red folder icon.

The screen instantly refreshed, displaying a dense grid of thumbnail images. Each thumbnail showed a different date and time stamp, but they all shared one common element: the front entryway of their house, illuminated by the porch light late at night.

"What are we looking at?" Maya breathed, leaning closer as her fingers gripped the edge of the coffee table.

Mark tapped the first thumbnail in the top left corner. The video file expanded to fill the entire screen, buffering for a brief second before beginning to play.

The timestamp read November 14th, 11:42 PM. Mark recognized the date instantly; he had been supposedly attending an emergency executive summit in Chicago that entire weekend. On the screen, the front door clicked open. A tall man in a tailored gray suit stepped into the dimly lit foyer, carrying a briefcase.

Before Mark could even process the stranger's face, the camera angle shifted smoothly. It was a secondary feed—one originating from the camera hidden discreetly inside the living room bookshelf, pointing directly toward the hallway entrance.

In that secondary feed, Elena walked briskly into the frame, wearing a silk robe. Her face wasn't twisted in anger or distorted by malice; instead, she wore a wide, radiant, welcoming smile—the kind of genuine, joyful smile Mark hadn't seen directed at himself in over a year. She threw her arms around the stranger in the gray suit, pulling him into a long, passionate embrace right inside the home Mark worked eighty hours a week to pay for.

Mark stopped breathing. The tablet felt like it was burning his palms. He stared at the screen as the audio picked up the muffled sound of laughter and whispered conversations echoing from the hallway.

"I told you he wouldn't suspect a thing," the audio captured Elena saying, her voice sweet, intimate, and entirely devoted to the man in the gray suit. "He’s too busy chasing corporate ghosts to notice what’s happening right under his roof."

The stranger chuckled, reaching up to stroke Elena’s cheek with a casual familiarity that suggested he had done it a hundred times before.

Maya gasped, clapping both hands over her mouth as the crushing realization hit her. She looked up at her father, her eyes wide with terror, expecting him to explode with rage, to throw the tablet against the wall, to scream.

Instead, Mark didn't make a sound. He simply stood there, his face entirely drained of color, his eyes fixed on the glowing screen as the video transitioned to the next clip in the sequence, showing an entirely different man stepping through their front door while Mark was away on business.
