Chapter 2 - The Blue Light of Truth

The blue glow from the tablet screen cast long, distorted shadows across the living room walls, reflecting directly in Mark’s wide, unblinking eyes. He stared down at the interface, his thumb hovering over the sleek glass surface. The device was the hub for the newly installed home security system—a network of high-definition lenses placed in strategic corners of the house, intended to give them peace of mind while Mark traveled for business. Instead, it had quietly recorded a reality that Mark had stubbornly refused to acknowledge.
Elena’s breath hitched. The carefully constructed facade of the innocent, wronged stepmother suddenly fractured, leaving her standing rigidly in her beige cardigan with her mouth slightly open. She took a half-step toward Mark, her hand trembling as she reached out to touch his arm.
"Mark, don't look at that," Elena said, her voice dropping the sweet cadence entirely, replaced by a sharp, desperate edge. "You know how she manipulates technology. She probably hacked the system, or edited those files to make me look like the bad guy. You trust me, don't you? After everything we've built together?"
Mark didn't pull away from her touch, but his muscles locked tight beneath his dark blue shirt. He ignored her plea, his finger tapping firmly on the glass icon labeled 'Living Room - 2:15 PM Yesterday.' A loading wheel spun for a agonizing second, the silence in the room stretching so thin that the faint hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen sounded like a roaring engine.
Maya stood arms crossed near the hallway entrance, watching her father with a cold, unyielding gaze. She didn't gloat. There was no satisfaction in being proven right, only a hollow ache in her chest that had been growing larger with every passing month. She had lived through the closed-door venom, the whispered insults, and the sudden, chilling shifts in personality that only occurred when the adult male of the house was safely out of sight.
The screen flickered, and the audio kicked in first. A sharp, ugly sound cut through the quiet living room—the sound of ceramic shattering against a baseboard.
On the tablet display, the video showed Elena standing exactly where she stood now, but her posture was entirely different. Her face was twisted into a snarl of pure malice, her finger pointed directly at Maya’s face in the exact same aggressive manner Maya had used just moments before.
"If you ever talk back to me again while your father is gone, I will make sure you have nowhere to live by the time you turn eighteen," the recorded version of Elena snarled on the screen, her voice dripping with venom. "You are nothing in this house. A parasite taking up space."
Mark froze. The tablet felt suddenly heavy in his hands, like a block of lead. He slowly turned his head to look at his wife, the man who prided himself on being a rational, observant provider feeling the ground completely vanish beneath his feet.
Elena swallowed hard, her eyes darting frantically toward the front door as if calculating her chances of outrunning the catastrophe she had so carefully engineered.
"It’s... it’s out of context," Elena stammered, her voice losing its anchor. "She pushed me to the absolute edge. You don't know what she says when the cameras aren't looking."
May you like
"The cameras record twenty-four hours a day, Elena," Mark said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. He tapped the menu icon, pulling up a drop-down list of twenty-four separate video files stored in the cloud. "And it looks like there are hundreds of hours more."
