Chapter 6 - A Catalog of Deception

The video continued to play silently in the background, transitioning from the first stranger in the gray suit to a second man—younger, wearing a casual leather jacket—who strode into the house with an air of complete familiarity. He didn't knock, and he didn't wait to be greeted. He simply punched a temporary access code into the smart lock, stepped across the threshold, and pulled Elena into a tight embrace.
Mark stood completely motionless, his tall frame rigid inside his dark blue button-down shirt. The absolute silence in the living room was deafening. He didn't shout. He didn't drop the tablet. He simply watched, his mind cataloging the faces of men he had never seen before in his life—men who had crossed the threshold of his family home while he was away believing he was securing their financial future.
Maya looked up from the screen, her heart breaking for her father as she watched the devastation wash over his features. All the late nights at the office, the endless travel, the missed birthdays, and the sacrifices he had made under the guise of providing security for his family—all of it had been systematically exploited by the woman he had trusted above everyone else.
"Dad," Maya whispered, her voice trembling as she reached out and gently placed her hand over his knuckles, trying to pry the glowing tablet from his rigid grip. "Turn it off. Please, just turn it off. You don't need to see anymore."
Mark didn't pull his hand away, nor did he close the file. His eyes remained fixed on the small glass screen, tracking the timecodes as they ticked forward into the early hours of the morning. Thumbnail after thumbnail rolled past in a relentless digital parade of betrayal. There were half a dozen different men, varying in age and appearance, each entering the house during Mark’s absence with the casual ease of regular occupants.
"She didn't just terrorize me when you were gone," Maya said, her voice dropping to a harsh, pained whisper as the bitter truth fully crystallized in her mind. "She was running an entire life right under our noses, using your absences to fund her recreation, and using the security system to keep track of everyone's schedules so her worlds never collided."
Mark slowly blinked, his throat moving as he swallowed a dry, painful lump. He finally lowered the tablet, the blue light fading from his face as he pressed the power button, plunging the screen into total blackness. The living room suddenly felt vast, cold, and utterly empty.
"Where is she?" Mark asked. His voice didn't sound like his own; it was hollow, flat, and chillingly devoid of emotion.
Maya looked toward the grand staircase leading to the upper floor. The upper hallway was shrouded in deep shadows, the warm morning sunlight failing to penetrate the gloom cast by the second-floor landing.
"She went upstairs," Maya answered, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Probably to pack her things, or... or to grab something else."
Before Mark could take a step toward the stairs, a sharp, metallic sound rang out from the second floor—a sound that made both of them freeze instantly in their tracks. It was the distinct click of the heavy oak door leading to Mark’s private home office unlatching from the inside.
Mark’s head snapped upward toward the landing. His private office wasn't just a workspace; it was where he kept all of his personal financial records, company incorporation documents, safety deposit box keys, and the physical passport files for both himself and Maya.
"She’s in my office," Mark said, the deadly calm instantly shattering as a spike of pure adrenaline surged through his veins.

Without another word, Mark dropped the tablet onto the coffee table and bolted across the living room toward the staircase, his long strides eating up the distance in seconds. Maya scrambled after him, her heart leaping into her throat as she realized that Elena wasn't just running away—she was making sure she left nothing behind.
