Chapter 3 - The Expanding Archive

The silence that settled back over the living room was suffocating. Mark stood frozen, the tablet screen casting an eerie, lunar light across his features. His thumb hovered over the list of archived video files, each one neatly labeled with a date, timestamp, and room location. There were folders for the kitchen, the hallway, and the upstairs landing. An entire catalog of domestic hostility stored on a quarter-pound piece of glass and silicon.
"Show me," Maya said quietly, her voice cutting through the thick tension. She stepped forward, abandoning her defensive posture by the hallway. "Show him what you said about my mother, Elena. Show him what you said when you found her old photo album in the attic."
Elena’s face drained of what little color it had left. She crossed her arms tightly over her white shirt, her fingernails digging deep into the fabric of her beige cardigan. The defensive warmth she had projected at the start of the argument was entirely gone, replaced by a cornered, feral hostility.
"You have no right to go digging through my past, and you certainly have no right to spy on me in my own home," Elena hissed, dropping all pretense of maternal affection as she glared directly at Maya. Then, she whipped her head toward Mark, her voice turning pleading and manipulative once more. "Mark, look at her! She’s turning you against me over some stupid out-of-context clips. Are you really going to let a teenager dictate the terms of our marriage based on edited home videos?"
Mark didn't answer immediately. He looked down at the tablet, his finger pressing blindly on a file dated three weeks prior—a Tuesday afternoon when he had supposedly been at a regional conference three states away.
The video loaded instantly. On the small screen, the kitchen camera sprang to life with crisp, high-definition clarity. In the footage, Elena was standing by the kitchen island, holding a porcelain mug. Maya walked into the frame, asking a simple question about dinner. Without looking up, Elena slammed the mug down, shattering it against the marble countertop, and turned on the girl with a barrage of profanity that made Mark physically recoil.
"You worthless little ungrateful brat," the audio from the tablet blared into the quiet living room. "Your mother died because she couldn't stand being around you either!"
Mark gasped, the air rushing out of his lungs as if he had been struck in the chest. He dropped his gaze from the screen to his wife, absolute horror dawning in his eyes. Those words weren't just cruel; they were a calculated strike at the deepest wound Maya carried—the sudden, tragic loss of her biological mother just three years prior.
"Elena..." Mark whispered, his voice cracking with a mixture of profound betrayal and sudden, terrifying realization. "You said... you told me you comforted her about that. You told me you were helping her heal."
"She was drowning in self-pity!" Elena screamed, the mask shattering completely as she lunged forward, trying to swat the tablet out of Mark’s hands. "She uses her mother's death as an excuse to do whatever she wants! I had to be strong with her! Someone had to break her down to build her back up!"
Mark sidestepped her lunge with practiced agility, holding the tablet high out of her reach. He looked at the woman he had loved, trusted, and married two years ago, realizing with sickening clarity that he had invited a stranger into their lives—a stranger who had systematically tortured his daughter behind his back.
"Pack your bags," Mark said, his voice dropping an octave, dead and cold. "Right now."
Elena stopped moving. She stood rigidly by the kitchen entrance, her chest heaving as she glared at both of them with pure, unadulterated hatred. A slow, chilling smile crept onto her lips, completely at odds with the tears staining her cheeks.

"You think I'm the only one who has secrets in this house, Mark?" Elena whispered, taking a slow step backward toward the grand staircase. "You might want to check the hidden folder at the bottom of that cloud drive before you throw me out."
