Chapter 11 - The Federal Raid

The booming command echoed up the stairwell with terrifying authority, freezing Mark and Maya in their tracks before they could even begin to comprehend the contents of the manila folder.
Before Mark could turn away from the open wall safe, three heavily armored figures wearing tactical vests emblazoned with FBI in bright yellow lettering poured into the private office. Their weapons were raised, sweeping the room with disciplined precision before locking onto Mark and the open safe behind him.
"Drop whatever is in your hands! Hands where we can see them right now!" the lead agent shouted, stepping forward with his rifle trained directly on Mark’s chest.
"Wait—this is my house! I called the police!" Mark yelled, instinctively raising his hands while letting the manila folder slip from his fingers, scattering the incriminating documents across the Persian rug.
"Mark Reynolds?" the agent demanded, not lowering his weapon as a second agent moved swiftly behind Mark, forcing his hands down and locking cold steel handcuffs around his wrists with practiced efficiency.
"Dad!" Maya screamed, lunging forward, but a female tactical officer intercepted her smoothly, gently pushing her back toward the doorway to keep her out of the line of fire.
"Stay back, miss. Keep your hands where we can see them," the officer instructed firmly, though her tone held a hint of professional sympathy.
Maya stood frozen by the doorway, her eyes wide with absolute horror as she watched her father—a man who worked seventy hours a week to provide for their family, who had just discovered his wife’s infidelity and fraud—being shoved against the mahogany desk by federal agents.
"There must be some mistake," Maya cried out, her voice cracking as tears finally spilled over her eyelashes. "He didn't do anything! It was her! Elena was the one stealing, she set him up!"
The lead agent ignored her plea, stepping over the scattered papers on the floor and shining a tactical flashlight directly into the interior of the open wall safe. He reached inside, picking up the heavy gold signet ring and sliding it into an evidence bag. He then pulled out the stack of encrypted hard drives and the signed corporate confession document.
The agent examined the signature on the document closely under the flashlight beam, then looked up at Mark, whose face was pale and drained of all color as he leaned heavily against the desk.
"Signatures match, and the biometrics check out. Mark Reynolds, you are under arrest for corporate wire fraud, embezzlement, and the disappearance of Richard Vance," the lead agent announced formally, reading the charges aloud as the flashbulbs of an arriving forensics team began to pop outside the office window.
Mark turned his head slightly, his eyes locking onto Maya’s tear-stained face across the room. There was no anger in his gaze now—only a profound, crushing sorrow and a terrifying realization that the web of deception went far deeper than he could have ever imagined.
"Maya," Mark whispered, his voice cracking under the weight of the moment. "Listen to me... check the back of the security server rack in the basement. Everything... everything is stored there."

Before Maya could ask what he meant, the agents pulled Mark firmly toward the doorway, guiding him down the stairs as the flashing lights of half a dozen federal vehicles painted the hallway in bright, blinding pulses of red and blue.
