Chapter 12 - The Basement Server

The heavy front door clicked shut downstairs, cutting off the echo of the federal agents' boots as they escorted Mark out into the blinding glare of the afternoon sun. The living room fell into an eerie, suffocating silence, broken only by the distant hum of the refrigerator and the rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner.
Maya stood frozen in the doorway of the second-floor office, her hands trembling as she stared down at the scattered papers littering the Persian rug. The light purple hoodie she wore felt suddenly freezing, as if the warmth had been completely sucked out of the house.
Her father’s last words echoed repeatedly in her mind: Check the back of the security server rack in the basement. Everything is stored there.
Maya took a slow, hesitant step backward out of the ruined office, her eyes darting down the shadowy hallway toward the grand staircase. The police and federal agents had cleared the upper floors, but the house felt entirely alien now—no longer a home, but a crime scene wrapped in suburban drywall.
She walked slowly down the stairs, each step creaking beneath her sneakers in the unnatural quiet. Passing through the bright living room where the argument had started less than an hour ago, she noticed the dark tablet still resting on the coffee table, its screen dark and dormant. She ignored it, walking straight past the kitchen island toward the heavy wooden door leading down to the basement.
The basement door was slightly ajar, a sliver of cool, damp air escaping from the darkness below. Maya pushed the door open, her hand finding the light switch on the wall. A harsh fluorescent tube flickered to life overhead, casting a sickly yellow glow over the concrete steps and the rows of storage shelves lining the subterranean walls.
She descended the stairs slowly, her breath pluming slightly in the chilly air. In the far corner of the basement sat the home network rack—a tall, black metal cabinet housing the high-end routers, data storage units, and the main server for the smart-home security system. The cabinet hummed quietly, its tiny LED status lights blinking in a hypnotic, rhythmic sequence.
Maya reached the server rack and knelt on the concrete floor, her fingers tracing the metal seams along the back access panel. Just as her father had indicated, a small, unsealed maintenance hatch at the rear of the unit was slightly ajar.
She reached inside, her fingers brushing against a loose tangle of Ethernet cables before touching something hard and flat. Pulling her hand back into the light, she held up a sleek, unmarked black flash drive.
Curiosity overriding her fear, Maya stood up and walked over to the small wooden workbench where an old desktop monitor sat plugged into the local network. She plugged the flash drive into the USB port.
