Chapter 7 - The Private Office

Mark vaulted up the first three steps of the grand staircase, his heavy footsteps echoing loudly against the polished hardwood. The bright, sterile sunlight of the living room gave way to the shadowed, cooler air of the second-floor hallway. At the far end of the corridor, the heavy oak door to Mark’s private office stood wide open, casting a narrow rectangle of warm light across the Persian rug.
"Elena!" Mark shouted, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that shook the walls of the hallway.
There was no answer from inside the room. Only the faint sound of rustling paper and the rapid, rhythmic clicking of computer keys reached their ears.
Mark reached the doorway first, planting his palm against the wooden frame and swinging himself into the room. Maya rushed right behind him, skidding to a halt beside his shoulder as she peered into the private sanctuary.
The office was in a state of chaotic disarray. The heavy mahogany desk, usually kept in immaculate order, was buried under a blizzard of scattered tax documents, bank statements, and legal binders. The laptop Mark used exclusively for remote corporate banking was open, its screen glowing brightly with an ongoing file transfer progress bar that read 84% Complete.
Standing in front of the open desk drawers with her back to them was Elena. She had already swapped her beige cardigan for a heavy black travel jacket. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a tight, utilitarian ponytail, and her fingers were frantically stuffing a thick stack of physical bearer bonds and passport booklets into a leather tote bag.
"Stop right there," Mark commanded, taking a heavy step into the room.
Elena froze mid-motion. Her hand hovered over the open drawer for a fraction of a second before she slowly turned around to face them. There was no panic on her face anymore; the mask of innocence was completely gone, replaced by a cold, calculated defiance.
"You're too late, Mark," Elena said smoothly, resting one hand casually against the edge of the mahogany desk. "The corporate account transfer will finish in less than two minutes. By the time you call your bank, the funds will have cleared through three offshore shell companies in the Caymans."
Maya let out a sharp gasp, stepping past her father’s shoulder. "You're stealing from him? After everything he's given you, after all the lies you told, you're robbing him blind?"
Elena let out a short, mocking laugh, her eyes narrowing as she looked down at Maya with absolute disdain.
"I'm not robbing him, sweetheart. I'm collecting severance pay for two years of putting up with his obsession with work and your pathetic teenage tantrums," Elena snapped, her voice dripping with venom. She grabbed her leather tote bag by the straps, slinging it over her shoulder with a sharp motion. "You built this cage for yourself, Mark. You abandoned your home, you ignored your daughter, and you invited a total stranger into your bed because you cared more about your title than your family. I just capitalized on your absence."
Mark didn't lunge at her. He didn't raise his voice. He stood completely still, his tall frame blocking the only exit from the office, his eyes fixed on Elena with a terrifying intensity that made even her confident posture falter for a split second.
"The offshore accounts you're transferring those funds to," Mark said softly, his voice dangerously low. "They aren't anonymous, Elena. They're tied directly to your brother’s primary business tax ID in Chicago."

Elena’s face froze, the color draining from her cheeks as the laptop screen behind her chimed with a crisp, triumphant sound: Transfer Complete.
