Chapter 4 - The Hidden Directory

The word 'hidden' hung in the air like a physical weight, dropping the temperature in the living room by several degrees. Mark’s hand, which had been gripping the edges of the tablet, twitched slightly. He stared at Elena, whose chilling smile had widened just enough to reveal a flash of teeth, completely stripping away the last remnants of the woman he thought he knew.

"What are you talking about?" Mark demanded, his voice tightening. He took a step forward, his dark blue button-down shirt pulling taut across his chest. "What hidden folder?"

Elena didn't answer right away. She slowly backed up another two steps, her hand sliding along the polished wooden banister of the staircase as if preparing for a swift exit to the upper floor. Her eyes darted from Mark to Maya, a cruel gleam of malicious triumph dancing in their depths.

"You’ve been so busy playing the successful corporate provider, Mark, flying off to meetings and patting yourself on the back for bringing home the paycheck," Elena said, her voice dropping into a low, mocking sing-song tone. "Always working late. Always traveling on the weekends. But security cameras don't just record the people who live here. They record the people who visit, too."

Maya frowned, taking a protective step closer to her father. The fierce anger that had fueled her entrance a few minutes ago was now being rapidly replaced by a cold, prickling dread. She looked at the tablet screen, where the main menu interface still displayed the list of standard room feeds.

"Dad, don't listen to her," Maya warned, her voice trembling slightly as she reached out to touch Mark’s sleeve. "She’s just trying to deflect. She’s trying to throw everything into chaos so you forget what she did to me."

"Am I?" Elena countered sharply, tilting her head with a mock-innocent expression. "Go ahead, Mark. Tap the settings icon in the top right corner. Enter the four-digit master PIN. The one you use for the family safe. There’s a password-protected subdirectory labeled 'Guest Log' that I didn't set up. And I certainly didn't film what happened inside your home while you were supposedly closing those big deals out of town."

Mark’s breathing hitched. His mind raced back through the months of late-night flights, urgent hotel stays, and last-minute business trips that his company had supposedly required of him. He remembered the quiet nods from his business partners, the locked office door in the den, the strange silence in the house whenever he returned unexpectedly early.

Without breaking eye contact with his wife, Mark’s thumb moved across the glass screen of the tablet. He tapped the small gear icon in the corner. A numeric keypad instantly popped up, demanding a four-digit PIN code.

"Don't do it, Dad," Maya pleaded, her voice dropping to a desperate whisper. "Whatever she’s implying, it’s a trap. She’s trying to destroy our family."

"If there’s something in this house that I need to know, I’m going to see it," Mark replied, his voice strained. He punched in the four-digit code—his wedding anniversary.

The keypad vanished with a soft chime. A new menu expanded on the screen, revealing a single, password-locked folder highlighted in bold red text, accompanied by a timestamp from three months prior. The file size was massive—over four hundred gigabytes of high-definition video data.

Elena let out a short, sharp laugh that sounded like breaking glass, turning around and taking the first two steps up the grand staircase.

"Enjoy the movie, darling," Elena called back over her shoulder, her voice echoing in the bright living room. "Make sure you watch it all the way to the end before you decide who packs their bags."
