Chapter 9: The Signed Confession

The heavy silence in the foyer became absolute. Even the flashing red and blue lights outside seemed to dim against the weight of the creased paper Elena held out toward the detective. Julian’s carefully constructed mask of calm finally cracked, a microscopic twitch of his jaw betraying the sudden, violent panic surging beneath his sharp grey suit.

Detective Vance stepped past Ethan and plucked the paper from the maid’s trembling hands. He unfolded it with slow, deliberate care, his eyes scanning the dense handwriting under the harsh overhead chandelier.

"What is this, Elena?" the detective asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register.

"It's... it's a false statement," Elena blubbered, her maroon and white uniform stained and disheveled. She kept her eyes glued to the floor, refusing to look at Julian or Madison. "Mr. Vance dictated every word to me in the kitchen five minutes before you knocked on the door. He told me to write that Mrs. Vance slipped on the soapy water. But... but I didn't see her slip. I saw Mrs. Madison standing over her at the top of the stairs, screaming about the trust fund papers, right before the push!"

Madison stepped forward, her blonde hair swinging sharply as her polished veneer of innocence evaporated entirely. Her voice turned ice-cold and venomous. "You stupid, ungrateful peasant! You signed that willingly in exchange for your severance package, and now you're turning coat because you think this boy's brother can protect you?"

"Madison, quiet!" Julian hissed, grabbing his wife’s arm with enough force to bruise, though he tried to mask the violence as a comforting gesture. "Detective, the maid is clearly unstable. She's been stealing from the estate for months, and we caught her. This is nothing more than a malicious extortion attempt by a disgruntled employee working in concert with my estranged son."

Ethan surged to his feet, towering over his father with a look of pure hatred. "You're a monster, Julian. You've been siphoning money from our family trust for years, and when she finally caught you and tried to annul the marriage, you and your little partner decided to silence her permanently!"

Detective Vance held up a hand, silencing the shouting match before it could escalate further. He looked down at the signed confession, then looked back up at Julian.

"Mr. Vance, your maid's testimony matches the preliminary spatial analysis of the staircase impact zone," the detective said evenly. "Furthermore, your security system logs—or what's left of them—show an unauthorized manual wipe initiated from the master console at 8:16 PM, two minutes after the incident occurred."

The detective snapped his notepad shut and signaled to the two uniformed officers standing by the door.

"Place Julian Vance and Madison Vance under arrest on suspicion of attempted murder and tampering with evidence," the detective ordered crisply.

As the heavy steel handcuffs clicked into place around Julian’s wrists, the man in the grey suit didn't struggle. He simply turned his head, casting a final, chilling glance at his youngest son standing by the stairs.

"You think you've won, Leo," Julian whispered, his voice smooth and venomous as the officers guided him toward the door. "But you have no idea what your mother hid in the basement safe."
