Chapter 13: The Maid's True Colors

The shaft of light from the open cellar door illuminated Elena’s face as she scanned the dim room, her previous meekness entirely replaced by a cold, calculating intensity. The maroon and white uniform she wore suddenly looked less like a servant's garment and more like a disguise. She walked with deliberate, silent steps toward the open vault safe, her eyes locked on the empty metal shelf where the documents had rested just moments before.
"I know you're down here, boys," Elena called out, her voice dropping its trembling accent entirely, revealing a sharp, educated cadence she had carefully concealed from the family for years. "You found the safe. You found the files. But taking them out of this room was a very poor tactical error."
Ethan tightened his grip on Leo’s shoulder, pulling the boy further into the protective shadow of the wooden crates. He could feel his heart hammering against his ribs, but his mind raced to calculate their options. The service stairs were blocked by the maid; the only way out of the cellar led straight past her.
"She's not just a maid, Ethan," Leo whispered frantically in the dark, his breath hitching in his throat. "She was working with them the whole time."
"Not with them, alongside them," a new voice echoed from the top of the stairs.
A tall figure stepped down into the dim light behind Elena, standing halfway down the concrete steps to block any retreat. It was Madison’s personal attorney, a slick man in a tailored charcoal suit who had supposedly been out of town on emergency retainer. He held a small, suppressed automatic pistol casually at his side, its matte black finish absorbing the meager light.
"Well, well, well," the attorney said, flashing a cold, predatory smile. "Julian and Madison were always far too soft. They wanted to stage an accidental fall to inherit the estate slowly. But real estate of this magnitude requires decisive management, wouldn't you agree, Elena?"
Elena turned around, offering the attorney a respectful nod before fixing her hard gaze back on the dark corners of the cellar. "The boys have the flash drive and the primary ledger, Mr. Sterling. If those files reach Detective Vance, our entire acquisition network collapses from the Caymans to Zurich."
Ethan slowly slid his hand into his jacket pocket, his fingers wrapping around the cold metal casing of the flash drive. He knew they couldn't fight their way out against a gun, but he also knew that handing over the evidence meant signing their own death warrants in a room where nobody would ever find them.

"You're too late," Ethan called out from the shadows, stepping out from behind the crates to shield his younger brother with his own body. "Detective Vance already has a mirrored cloud backup of everything on this drive streaming to his precinct terminal."
Mr. Sterling let out a dry, humorless laugh, raising the suppressed pistol just a fraction of an inch higher. "A clever bluff, young man. But canyon cell towers don't support cloud syncing through concrete foundations. Hand over the drive, and perhaps we can arrange an 'accidental' disappearance for you both that matches your mother's."
