Chapter 14: The Final Stand
The damp air of the cellar seemed to freeze in place as Ethan stood his ground, his hand gripping the flash drive tightly inside his jacket pocket. Beside him, Leo clutched his own black smartphone, his thumb hovering frantically over the screen as he desperately tried to bypass the phone's locked security interface to send a silent distress beacon.
"Don't do this," Ethan said, his voice steady despite the adrenaline roaring in his ears. "You can't kill us both and expect to walk out of here. The police know we came down to the basement."
Mr. Sterling took a slow, deliberate step down the concrete stairs, the suppressed pistol leveled squarely at Ethan's chest. "The police think you and your brother ran off into the woods in a panic, overwhelmed by grief. By the time they search the canyon, Elena and I will be across the border with every cent of the Vance trust."
Elena stepped forward, her hand tightening around the heavy brass fireplace poker. "Give it to him, Ethan. You can't change what's already set in motion."
Leo’s thumb finally punched through the lock screen on his phone. The device buzzed once in his palm, connecting briefly to a local repeater tower just as Mr. Sterling cocked the pistol. With a quick flick of his wrist, Leo hit the broadcast button, sending their exact GPS coordinates and an open microphone audio stream directly to Detective Vance's personal radio frequency.
"I don't think so!" Leo screamed, hurling the phone directly at the lightbulb hanging from the ceiling.
The glass shattered in a brilliant shower of sparks, plunging the entire cellar into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
Mr. Sterling cursed loudly as a gunshot echoed through the confined space, the bullet splintering a wooden crate inches above Ethan's head. "Elena, find the wall switch!"
