Chapter 12: The Pandora's Box

The heavy steel door of the vault swung open with a slow, smooth hiss, releasing a puff of cold, stagnant air that carried the faint scent of aged paper and dried lavender. Ethan lowered his phone, its flashlight beam cutting directly into the dark interior of the safe. Resting on the felt-lined metal shelf were three distinct items: a thick stack of legal documents tied with a faded red ribbon, a heavy gold pocket watch with a cracked glass face, and a standard flash drive labeled with a single handwritten initials: E.V.

"What's in there?" Leo asked, standing on his tiptoes to peer over his brother's shoulder into the recess of the safe.

Ethan reached inside, his fingers brushing against the cold leather of the legal files before picking up the flash drive. He felt a shiver run down his spine. "Proof," he whispered. "Proof of everything Julian and Madison tried to hide."

He carefully lifted the stack of documents and set them down on a small wooden crate serving as a makeshift table in the center of the damp cellar. Untying the faded red ribbon, Ethan flipped open the top folder. The pages were yellowed at the edges, filled with bank routing numbers, offshore accounts registered in the Cayman Islands, and—most damning of all—a prenuptial agreement bearing signatures that looked unmistakably forged.

"Look at this signature, Leo," Ethan said, pointing to the bottom of the document. "This is Mommy's signature on the transfer of the estate, but the date listed is from three months ago—before she even threatened to annul the marriage. Julian and Madison planned this hostile takeover of her inheritance long before tonight."

Leo leaned in closer, tracing the lines with his finger. "And the pocket watch? Whose is that?"

Ethan picked up the heavy gold timepiece, turning it over in his palm. He pressed the small release button on the crown, and the polished metal lid sprang open. Inside, engraved on the inner casing, were the initials T.V. alongside a date: October 3, years ago.

"It was our real father's watch," Ethan said quietly, his voice thick with emotion. "Julian told us he hocked it to pay off gambling debts before he abandoned us. But he didn't abandon us at all... Julian took it from him."

Before Leo could respond, the muted sound of heavy footsteps echoed from the wooden service stairs above them. Someone was descending into the cellar.

Ethan instantly shoved the documents and the flash drive into his jacket pockets, grabbing Leo by the shoulder and pulling him behind a stack of empty wooden crates in the far corner of the damp room.

The cellar door creaked open wider, casting a long shaft of light down the concrete steps. A tall, silhouetted figure stepped into the room—not a police officer, and not Julian. It was Elena the maid, moving with a desperate, hurried stealth that completely contradicted her earlier fearful demeanor.

She wasn't carrying her white bucket anymore. Instead, her hands were clenched tightly around a heavy brass fireplace poker she had retrieved from the upstairs hearth.
