Chapter 8: The Interrogation Begins

The glaring lights of the police cruisers continued to sweep across the high ceilings of the entryway, casting rhythmic flashes of crimson and azure over the tense faces gathered in the foyer. Detective Vance stood with his arms crossed over his dark trench coat, his eyes darting between Julian, Madison, and Ethan, who was still kneeling desperately beside his unconscious mother.
"Mr. Vance," the detective repeated, his voice cutting through the hum of the cooling night air. "I asked you to explain the situation. My dispatcher received an encrypted data transmission from an IP address registered to this estate, detailing a physical altercation and a deliberate act of violence. Care to explain why your home security feed was remotely locked down from the outside while a woman lay bleeding on your marble floor?"
Julian didn't flinch. He maintained his posture of calm, dignified grief, adjusting the cuffs of his white shirt with practiced ease.
"Detective, I am deeply relieved you're here, but I assure you, there has been a terrible misunderstanding," Julian began, pitching his voice to sound steady and reasonable. "My wife and I were returning from a business dinner when our automated security system alerted us to a perimeter breach—which we now realize was staged by my estranged son, Ethan, who broke into our network. When we entered the house, we found our maid, Elena, in a panic over a domestic accident. My wife slipped on a wet floor while carrying supplies, or rather, Elena spilled the bucket, and Mrs. Vance—my wife Elena, not the maid—fell while trying to navigate the stairs."
Madison nodded solemnly beside him, playing her part with chilling perfection. "It was horrifying, Detective. The boy, Leo, was in complete shock. He's been hallucinating out of grief and resentment toward our marriage."
Ethan snapped his head up from where he knelt beside his mother, his face twisted in a mask of furious disbelief. "Lies! Both of you, absolute liars!" Ethan pointed a shaking finger at Madison. "She didn't slip! Madison pushed her! I saw the live telemetry data from the smart-home hallway camera before they managed to scramble the local server logs!"
"Mr. Vance, please control your son," Detective Vance said coldly, pulling out a small notepad. "Ethan, is it? You claim you have telemetry data proving a physical assault? Where is this data right now?"
Ethan reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek, ruggedized laptop, its screen glowing with complex lines of code and video scrubbing timelines. "Right here. I pulled the encrypted backup stream the second Leo called me. Madison shoved my stepmother into the brass umbrella stand at exactly 8:14 PM, and Julian helped her wipe the physical evidence before you arrived."
Madison let out a brittle, theatrical gasp, clutching her chest. "He's fabricating digital files, Detective! He has hated me since the day I married his father. He's trying to frame us for murder!"
The detective looked at the laptop screen, then up at Julian, whose face remained an unreadable mask of stoic innocence.
"Let's take a look at that laptop, son," the detective said, stepping forward.

Before Ethan could hand over the device, the front door swung wider open, and Elena the maid rushed back into the foyer, holding a crumpled piece of paper high above her head with both hands.
"Don't look at the laptop!" Elena sobbed, tears streaming down her face as she thrust the paper toward the detective. "Look at this instead! Mr. Vance made me sign it under threat of firing, but I couldn't do it anymore! Here is the real confession!"
