Chapter 6: The Perimeter Breach

The sudden wail of the security klaxon reverberated through the luxurious entryway, bouncing off the high vaulted ceilings and rattling the glass of the grand front windows. The large wall-mounted security display by the door flickered from a calm blue standby screen to a harsh, flashing crimson warning. A camera feed at the front gates showed a battered black sedan idling just outside the wrought-iron barrier, its headlights cutting blinding swaths through the gathering dusk.
Julian’s hand instantly released Elena’s arm. He spun around, his sharp grey suit jacket flaring as he rushed toward the wall monitor. His fingers danced frantically across the touch panel, trying to override the lockdown protocol.
"Who is that?" Madison hissed, abandoning her slow advance up the stairs. She abandoned her maternal facade entirely, her face twisting into a mask of pure panic. "Did you invite someone, Julian? Did you leave a trail?"
"I didn't invite anyone!" Julian shouted over the blaring siren, his eyes darting across the multiple camera angles displayed on the screen. "It's not an intruder from the outside. Look at the license plate—it's Ethan's car."
Leo gasped, a sudden surge of triumph cutting through his terror. He clutched the black smartphone tighter, holding it up like a trophy. "I told you! He said he was coming home! He knew you'd try to hurt Mommy!"
Elena took advantage of the absolute chaos to scramble backward, grabbing her white bucket and retreating down the hallway toward the kitchen like a ghost vanishing into the shadows. Nobody tried to stop her; all eyes were locked on the front monitor as the battered sedan began to ram the automated iron gates of the estate with a sickening crunch of grinding metal and splintering steel.
"He's going to tear the gates down," Madison whispered, her hands flying to cover her mouth, her manicured nails digging into her skin. "Julian, stop him! If he gets inside this house, everything we've built, everything your wife signed over to you last week—it's all going to come out!"
Julian’s face turned an ugly shade of purple. He punched a master code into the wall keypad, but the system flashed a bright red error message: OVERRIDE DENIED. REMOTE ADMINISTRATOR ACTIVE.
"He locked us out of our own security grid," Julian muttered in disbelief, his eyes wide with a terrifying realization. "Ethan didn't just drive home. He hacked the mainframe from his car."
Leo watched his father panic with a cold, detached satisfaction. The powerful man in the sharp grey suit suddenly looked small, trapped inside his own fortress of marble and glass.
"He knows about the transfer papers, Julian," Leo called out from the stairs, his voice ringing clear and steady above the alarm. "He knows Madison made Mommy sign them right before she fell. And he brought the police with him."

Madison whipped her head around, her blonde hair whipping across her face as she glared up at the boy. "There are no police, you little liar! Look at the camera feed—it's just a single car!"
As if in direct response to her words, the piercing wail of the security siren was suddenly joined by the unmistakable, howling wail of multiple police cruisers screaming up the winding canyon road, their blue and red emergency strobes painting the luxury entryway in flashing washes of violent color.
