Chapter 2: Echoes in the Hallway

The mention of Ethan’s name seemed to physically strike Julian. The sharp lines of his grey suit tightened around his frame as he took a slow, calculated step forward. The marble floor beneath his polished leather shoes felt dangerously slick, mirroring the treacherous ground upon which their entire family dynamic now rested. Elena, the maid, kept her head bowed low near the white bucket, her shoulders shaking with silent sobs that suggested she knew far more than she dared to utter aloud.

"Ethan is miles away at university, Leo," Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, menacing baritone designed to intimidate. "You are letting your imagination run wild after seeing a terrible accident. Accidents happen every day in a house this size. Elena didn't mop properly, your mother slipped, and you are projecting your grief onto the wrong people."

Madison gently stroked Leo’s light brown hair, but the gesture felt more like a restraint than a comfort. Her blonde hair fell perfectly over her shoulders, framing a face that remained unnervingly serene despite the pooling blood just a few feet away. "We need to call an ambulance right now, Julian," she said, playing the part of the concerned bystander with chilling precision. "The boy is in shock. He doesn't know what he's saying."

Leo wrenched himself out of Madison’s embrace, staggering backward until his spine hit the carved wooden balustrade of the staircase. He pointed back toward the landing where he had first made the call. "I didn't imagine it! I saw Madison shove her at the top of the stairs just before the screaming started. I heard the push, Madison! I heard you say she was in the way!"

Elena finally looked up, her dark eyes wide with a mixture of fear and warning. She shook her head imperceptibly at Leo, mouthing a single word that the boy was too furious to decipher.

Julian’s eyes darted toward the maid, a silent communication passing between employer and employee that spoke volumes. The tension in the luxurious entryway became so thick it felt almost impossible to draw a clean breath.

"Elena," Julian commanded, his tone authoritative and sharp. "Get up from the floor right now. Take the bucket and clean up this mess in the kitchen. Leave us to handle the boy and his mother."

"No, sir, wait," Elena stammered, scrambling to her feet while clutching her maroon apron. "The police... shouldn't we wait for the police before anyone touches anything?"

Madison’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a glacial glare. "The police, Elena? For a simple domestic slip and fall? Let’s not invite unnecessary drama into this home unless you want to find yourself looking for a new job by tonight."

Leo watched the exchange with burning clarity. He realized then that the threat wasn't a warning about his future—it was a threat about his mother's life.

"You're not moving her," Leo whispered, stepping defensively over the first step of the stairs. "And if anything happens to Mommy, Ethan's lawyer is going to own this entire house."
