Chapter 5: The Locked Vault

The faint hum of the estate's backup generator seemed to amplify the suffocating tension in the grand entryway. Leo clutched the black smartphone against his chest like a shield, backing up another step onto the wooden stairs. The dark screen offered no reflection, only a black mirror of his own terrified face. Below him, his mother’s still form lay dangerously close to the white bucket, the pool of dark crimson spreading slowly across the immaculate white marble.

"Don't touch me!" Leo screamed as Julian took a measured, deliberate step up the first riser of the staircase.

"Leo, be sensible," Julian said, his voice dropping into a smooth, persuasive register that sounded terrifyingly calm. "That phone is connected to a closed network router in the study. Whatever you think you streamed to your brother went nowhere. You are a child playing a game you don't understand, and you are hurting yourself more than anyone else."

Madison remained standing by the pool of blood, her expression unreadable as she watched the exchange. She didn't look down at the injured woman; instead, her eyes were fixed entirely on the smartphone in Leo’s grip. There was a desperate hunger in her gaze, a sharp calculation that hinted at secrets far deeper than a simple marital dispute or a shove on the stairs.

"He's right, Julian," Madison murmured, her voice laced with sudden urgency. "We don't have time to play psychological games with a boy. If Ethan really does have remote access to the house servers from his university dorm, we are sitting ducks. The vault in the study... is the network hub still active in there?"

Julian stiffened, shooting a warning glance at his wife for speaking too freely in front of the witnesses. "The study is secured, Madison. Nobody accesses the main server without the master biometric override."

Elena, still firmly gripped by Julian’s hand, let out a shaky breath. "Mr. Vance... please let me go. I don't care about your servers, I don't care about the trust fund, and I certainly don't care about Mrs. Vance's money. I just want to clean my floors and go home to my children."

"Your children aren't seeing you tonight, Elena, unless you help us resolve this cleanly," Julian whispered, his fingers tightening painfully around the maid's arm.

Leo watched the abuse unfold with burning eyes. He knew Elena was weak, easily frightened into compliance, but he also knew she was the only person in the room who had seen the truth before the lies were constructed.

"She pushed her, Elena!" Leo shouted down the stairs, his voice breaking with anguish. "Tell them! Tell him Madison pushed Mommy into the brass umbrella stand before she fell down the steps!"

Elena’s eyes widened in sheer panic. She looked from Leo to Julian, and finally to Madison, who was slowly ascending the stairs herself, her maroon pantsuit swishing softly with every calculated movement.

"I... I didn't see the umbrella stand," Elena stammered, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "I only heard the crash!"

Madison reached the third step, extending a hand toward Leo with a sickeningly sweet smile. "Give me the phone, Leo. Let's call your brother together and explain everything like a civilized family."

Leo raised his arm to hurl the phone against the marble floor below, but before his fingers could release the device, the front security monitors on the wall suddenly flared to life with a loud, piercing alarm.
