Chapter 4: Fractured Alibis

The realization hung suspended in the air between them like a physical weight. Julian’s hand hovered near his pocket, his fingers curling into the fine wool of his grey suit as the truth laid itself bare. He hadn't called emergency services. Neither had Madison. Their grand entrance through the front doors moments after the scream had been carefully timed, calculated to establish presence rather than provide rescue.
Leo let out a sharp, breathless laugh devoid of any humor. "You didn't call them, did you? You wanted her to die."
"That is an absurd accusation, Leo!" Madison snapped, her cultivated veneer finally cracking at the edges. Her blonde hair swung sharply as she turned to face him fully, the maroon pantsuit rustling with her agitation. "We rushed home because the security system alerted our phones to a perimeter breach. We didn't know the extent of the emergency until we crossed this threshold!"
"Our security system only alerts for doors and windows, Madison," Julian interjected quietly, his voice dangerously level as he corrected his wife's frantic lie. "It doesn't monitor internal slips."
Madison’s eyes widened slightly as she realized her mistake, her mouth parting in a soundless O. She quickly tried to recover, placing a hand on Julian’s chest. "I meant the smart-home audio sensors, darling. You know the ones we installed last month to monitor the estate."
"We don't have internal audio sensors," Julian replied coldly, stepping away from her touch. The cracks in their facade were widening by the second, exposing the rot underneath.
Elena slowly backed toward the hallway leading to the kitchens, clearly desperate to escape the toxic fallout of the unfolding disaster. But Julian’s hand shot out, grabbing the maid’s arm with enough force to make her gasp.
"You aren't going anywhere, Elena," Julian said without looking at her, his eyes locked onto his youngest son. "We are all going to stay right here until the authorities arrive. And when they do, we are going to tell a very simple, very consistent story about a tragic domestic accident."
Leo planted his feet firmly on the wooden step, refusing to back down an inch. "Ethan recorded the call. Every word you just said. Every lie about the security system, every lie about not calling the ambulance. It's all streaming live to his laptop."
Madison scoffed, though her face had gone slightly pale. "And where is this miraculous phone recording stored, Leo? On a device you're holding right now? A phone that has no cellular service in this canyon?"
Leo’s breath hitched. He looked down at the black smartphone in his hand. The signal bars in the upper left corner were completely empty, displaying a small, damning circle with a slash through it.

"No," Leo whispered, panic surging back into his chest. "No, it was working just a second ago..."
Julian smiled, a cold, humorless stretching of his lips. "Signal blockers, Leo. Standard security protocol for a high-end estate when unwanted visitors try to call out. Hand over the phone."
