Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Hallway

The heavy footsteps grew louder, dragging slowly across the hardwood floor of the darkened hallway just outside the living room archway.

“Stay behind me, Clara, keep Lily down,” David commanded in a harsh whisper, raising the heavy brass candlestick like a club.

Detective Miller drew her service pistol with a practiced, metallic slide, moving swiftly to the side of the doorway to take cover.

“Identify yourself or I will open fire!” Miller shouted into the pitch-black hallway, her voice ringing with absolute authority.

The footsteps stopped instantly. A heavy, ragged breath echoed from the shadows just beyond the threshold of the room.

“You’re too late, Detective,” a distorted, raspy voice hissed from the darkness, sounding as though the speaker was using a digital voice modulator.

“Drop to your knees with your hands where I can see them!” Miller ordered, keeping her weapon aimed squarely at the center of the dark opening.

A metallic object clattered against the floorboards, sliding across the Persian rug and stopping near the edge of the coffee table.

David squinted down at the object in the dim light of the smart-home control panel, his breath catching in his throat.

It was a heavy-duty master key ring, identical to the ones used by the private estate management company Elena had hired last month.

“Who sent you?” David demanded, taking a cautious step forward while keeping the brass candlestick raised defensively.

“Ask your wife’s lawyer,” the raspy voice mocked softly, followed immediately by the sound of a window shattering in the adjacent dining room.

Detective Miller rushed past David into the hallway, firing two warning shots into the ceiling as she bolted toward the broken dining room window.

“Don't move!” Miller yelled, but the heavy thud of boots sprinting across the backyard lawn confirmed the intruder had already escaped into the night.

David lowered the candlestick slowly, his hands shaking as the adrenaline began to fade, leaving behind a profound, bone-deep exhaustion.

Clara rushed over to the sofa, wrapping her arms around Lily to comfort the terrified little girl who was now crying softly.

“Mr. Thornton, we need to secure this property immediately,” Miller said, jogging back into the living room with her weapon holstered.

“How? Someone has a master key to every door in this house,” David said, his voice hollow as he stared at the key ring on the rug.

“That means the threat is internal, or someone gave them unauthorized access,” Miller replied, eyeing Clara with a momentary glance of suspicion.

“It wasn't Clara,” David defended quickly, stepping between the detective and the trembling maid. “She saved my daughter by pointing out the camera.”

“I agree she helped, but protocols require us to investigate everyone connected to this household,” Miller insisted, pulling out her notepad.

Before David could argue further, the smart-home control panel on the wall suddenly chimed loudly, displaying a new notification message.

David walked slowly toward the panel, tapping the screen to open the encrypted file that had just been uploaded from an unknown remote terminal.
