Chapter 13 - The Ghost Account

David froze, his arms tightening automatically around eight-year-old Lily as the chilling words echoed from the abandoned mobile phone on the kitchen counter.
“A ghost account inside this house?” David repeated, his voice laced with absolute disbelief and rising panic.
“That’s what the federal metadata trace indicates,” Detective Miller confirmed through the phone speaker. “An encrypted local router node has been siphoning micro-transactions from your primary business accounts for over a year.”
Clara stepped closer to the kitchen island, her brow furrowing in deep confusion. “Local router? But the main network hub is down in the basement utility closet.”
“Exactly,” Miller said sharply. “Which means someone with physical access to the estate’s hardware installed a secondary relay transmitter right beneath your feet.”
David set Lily down gently on a nearby kitchen stool, pulling out his keys and searching for the small brass key that unlocked the basement door.
“Stay here with Clara, sweetheart. Daddy has to check something in the basement,” David instructed, trying to keep his voice steady for his daughter’s sake.
Lily nodded timidly, her small hands clutching the edge of the counter as Clara stepped up beside her with a reassuring, protective smile.
David jogged across the dining room to the hidden door beneath the grand staircase, sliding the brass key into the old-fashioned lock with trembling fingers.
The heavy wooden door clicked open, revealing a dark, concrete stairwell descending into the cool, shadowed depths of the estate’s sub-level.
David flipped the wall switch, but only a faint, flickering amber glow illuminated the top three steps, casting long, eerie shadows across the concrete walls.
He pulled a small tactical flashlight from the hallway drawer, clicking it on to pierce the darkness as he descended the stairs one careful step at a time.
The air in the basement smelled of damp concrete and warm electronics, accompanied by the low, steady hum of the main server rack in the corner.
David swept his flashlight beam across the rows of blinking green and amber status lights until it stopped on the master network terminal.
Taped directly to the back of the primary router was a small, black box equipped with a blinking red LED light and an active cellular antenna.
“Found it,” David muttered into his phone, keeping the line open so Detective Miller and Agent Vance could monitor the discovery remotely.
“Don't touch it directly, Mr. Thornton!” Miller warned urgently through the speaker. “It could be rigged with a remote wipe trigger.”
David paused, his fingers hovering just inches away from the unauthorized transmitter as a sudden metallic click echoed from the basement stairs behind him.
He spun around instantly, sweeping his tactical flashlight beam upward toward the top of the dark concrete staircase.
Standing in the dim amber doorway was a tall, unfamiliar figure dressed in a dark utility jumpsuit, holding a heavy wrench in one gloved hand.

“Game over, Mr. Thornton,” a raspy, distorted voice echoed down the concrete stairwell, blocking David’s only path back up to the house.
