Chapter 5 - An Anonymous Warning

David stared down at his glowing phone screen while the glass of water sat untouched on the mahogany coffee table between them.

The unknown number had sent a single, chilling text message accompanied by a low-resolution photograph taken from across the street.

“She wasn't working alone,” David read aloud, his voice barely a terrified whisper that echoed in the quiet, tense living room.

Detective Miller stepped closer, leaning over the back of the sofa to inspect the glowing screen in David’s trembling hand.

“Show me that,” Miller demanded, her professional composure instantly returning as she snatched the phone to analyze the metadata.

The photograph showed a shadowy figure standing near the edge of the property line, holding a long-range telephoto camera pointed directly at their window.

Clara gasped, covering her mouth with her hand as she recognized the distant silhouette standing beneath the flickering streetlamp outside.

“That’s... that’s the man who delivered the grocery packages on Tuesday,” Clara stammered, her eyes wide with sudden, renewed fear.

“A delivery driver?” Detective Miller questioned, tapping the screen to trace the incoming message through local cellular towers.

“He looked at Lily strangely,” David recalled, his mind racing backward through the events of the week as the pieces slowly connected. “He asked if she was my only child.”

Lily whimpered again, her small body shivering violently against her father’s chest as the traumatic memories of the week compounded upon themselves.

“Shh, sweetheart, you're safe now, Daddy’s right here,” David murmured soothingly, kissing the top of his daughter’s long brown hair.

Detective Miller walked quickly toward the front window, peering out into the darkened suburban street where the police cruiser had just departed.

“That wasn't a random delivery driver,” Miller stated flatly, turning back to face the two adults in the room. “That was a surveillance scout.”

“A scout for whom?” David demanded, standing up abruptly and setting Lily gently down on the velvet sofa cushions beside a soft throw pillow.

“Someone tied to Elena’s hidden financial accounts,” Miller replied, pulling her radio from her belt to call for immediate backup units.

Before Miller could press the transmission button, the overhead lights in the entire house flickered once and died completely.

The living room was plunged into near-total darkness, illuminated only by the faint, eerie glow of the smart-home control panel on the wall.

Clara screamed softly as a heavy thud echoed from the back hallway near the kitchen, sounding like a door being forcefully kicked open.

David lunged forward to shield Lily, grabbing a heavy brass candlestick from the mantelpiece as footsteps approached the living room doorway in the dark.
