Chapter 14 - The Basement Trap

David froze, the tactical flashlight beam shaking slightly in his hand as he illuminated the masked intruder blocking the basement stairwell.
“Who are you?” David demanded, trying to keep his voice firm while calculating the distance between himself and the exit.
“Just a contractor cleaning up loose ends,” the masked figure rasped, taking a slow, deliberate step down the concrete steps with the heavy wrench.
Through the open phone connection resting on a nearby crate, Detective Miller’s voice erupted urgently from the device.
“Mr. Thornton! Get away from the router! Federal backup is five minutes out, stall him!” Miller shouted through the speaker.
The intruder laughed harshly, lifting the wrench higher. “Five minutes is plenty of time to wipe the local drives and ensure nobody walks out of this house alive.”
David didn't wait. He grabbed a heavy metal folding chair from the corner of the basement and hurled it directly up the stairwell at the intruder.
The chair slammed hard against the intruder’s shins, causing the man to stumble sideways and drop the heavy wrench with a loud, echoing crash.
David bolted past the stumbling figure, scrambling up the concrete steps two at a time and bursting out through the basement door into the dining room.
“Clara! Grab Lily and get out through the front doors right now!” David yelled, sprinting toward the foyer while panting heavily.
Clara grabbed Lily’s hand without hesitation, rushing toward the front entrance just as the heavy oak door was kicked open from the outside.
Agent Vance and three tactical federal agents poured into the foyer, their weapons drawn and ready for immediate engagement.
“Clear!” Agent Vance shouted, spotting David and Clara sprinting safely toward the perimeter line with young Lily held securely between them.
Two tactical agents rushed past them down the basement stairwell, while Detective Miller rushed over to check on David and his shaken daughter.
“Are you both alright?” Miller asked anxiously, shining her small flashlight across David’s arms to check for injuries.
“We’re safe, Detective. But the intruder is still trapped in the basement,” David managed to gasp out, leaning against the foyer wall to catch his breath.
Agent Vance emerged from the basement stairwell a moment later, escorting the masked intruder in handcuffs with his face uncovered.
David stared at the unmasked man in absolute shock, recognizing the face instantly from the background checks Elena’s firm had previously archived.
“Marcus’s former partner,” David whispered, realizing the deepest layer of the corporate betrayal had finally been laid bare.
The intruder glared venomously at David as federal agents pushed him toward the open front door into the blinding morning light.
“You think stopping the server saves you, Thornton?” the intruder sneered. “The master escrow keys are already uploading to an external offshore drop.”
Agent Vance slapped a heavy hand on the man’s shoulder, shoving him toward the waiting transport vehicle without a word.
