Chapter 10 - The Sirens Outside

The wailing police sirens grew deafeningly loud, converging on the Thornton residence from multiple directions as flashing red and blue lights painted the front windows.
Detective Miller didn't hesitate, quickly slamming the steel handcuffs onto Richard’s wrists and shoving the struggling attorney against the foyer wall.
“What is happening out there?” David demanded, walking briskly to the front window to part the blinds and peer out into the street.
Two unmarked federal SUVs had blocked the driveway, alongside three marked squad cars, their emergency strobes casting frantic shadows across the lawn.
Federal agents in tactical gear swarmed the front yard, while a senior official in a sharp black overcoat marched directly up the front steps.
The heavy front door swung open automatically as the smart-home panel unlocked itself under federal override protocols.
“Special Agent Vance, Federal Bureau of Investigation,” the senior official announced, flashing his credentials before stepping into the foyer.
Richard stared at the federal agent in absolute horror, his earlier arrogance completely vanished. “Marcus? You... you made a deal?”
The federal agent ignored the handcuffed attorney entirely, walking straight past him to shake hands with Detective Miller.
“Good work securing the primary suspect, Miller. Local dispatch just intercepted the offshore server relay,” Agent Vance reported, his voice crisp and professional.
David stepped back from the window, his gaze shifting from the federal agent to Clara, who was now trembling with a mix of shock and profound relief.
“Marcus Vance is your brother?” David asked Clara, the pieces finally snapping into place regarding the family name and the grocery delivery scout.
“Yes, Mr. Thornton,” Clara whispered, tears spilling over her lashes once more. “He’s an undercover federal financial crimes investigator. He planted himself as a delivery driver to infiltrate Elena’s inner circle.”
Richard let out a harsh, defeated laugh, rattling his handcuffs against the wall. “You set up your own sister? What kind of monster are you?”
Agent Vance turned his cold gaze toward the corrupt attorney. “She volunteered to take the risk to expose the human trafficking and embezzlement ring you and Elena were running.”
David staggered backward as if struck by a physical blow, his hands gripping the back of the velvet sofa for balance. “Human... trafficking?”
“Elena wasn't just abusing Lily for sport, Mr. Thornton,” Agent Vance stated gravely, pulling a classified case file from his coat. “She was grooming the child for illicit transfer through an adoption brokerage syndicate.”
Lily wandered out from the hallway, rubbing her tired eyes in her pink dress, looking confused by the heavy military and police presence in her home.
David dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms tightly around his daughter and burying his face in her long brown hair as silent tears finally broke free.
“You’re safe now, baby. Daddy’s got you,” David sobbed quietly, rocking her back and forth on the Persian rug while the federal agents secured the house.
Agent Vance walked over to Clara, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder before turning his attention back to the detained attorney.
“Read him his rights, Miller. We have every offshore account frozen and every co-conspirator identified,” Agent Vance instructed firmly.
