Chapter 3 - Whispers of the Past

“What did you say, Elena?” David demanded, his voice dropping an octave as he shifted Lily slightly to look at his handcuffed wife.
“She knew about the medical records,” Elena spat, her voice dripping with venom and desperation. “She snooped in my private desk months ago.”
Clara shook her head rapidly, stepping back until her back hit the polished wood of the grand piano. “That is a complete lie! I never touch her personal things!”
Detective Miller turned her sharp gaze from Elena to Clara, assessing the maid’s genuine panic with a cold, professional eye.
“Is that true, Ms. Vance? Did you ever investigate Mrs. Thornton’s private belongings?” Miller asked, her tone entirely neutral yet deeply probing.
“Only once,” Clara admitted in a trembling whisper, her eyes filling with fresh tears as she realized the dangerous ground she was standing on.
David frowned deeply, stepping away from Lily for a brief moment. “Clara, what are you talking about? What did you find?”
Clara swallowed hard, the memory clearly bringing back deep psychological distress that made her whole body shake against the polished mahogany.
“Two months ago, I was dusting the study,” Clara began, speaking slowly as the police officers watched her every move. “I found a false bottom in her mahogany desk drawer.”
Elena let out a sharp, hysterical laugh, rattling her handcuffs against the belt loop of the nearest officer. “She’s framing me! She’s a thief!”
“Quiet down,” the officer warned Elena, tightening his grip on her arm to keep her from lunging across the Persian rug toward the maid.
Clara took a deep, trembling breath, forcing herself to maintain composure in front of the stern detective and her devastated employer.
“Inside that hidden compartment wasn't money or jewelry, Mr. Thornton,” Clara said, locking eyes with David for the first time. “It was a notebook.”
“What kind of notebook?” Detective Miller pressed, stepping closer to Clara and pulling a small digital voice recorder from her pocket.
“A ledger,” Clara replied, her voice barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator in the distant kitchen. “Detailed logs of every time Elena disciplined Lily.”
David staggered backward as if he had been physically struck, his hand gripping the back of the sofa to steady his shaking legs.
“Disciplined?” David echoed, the word tasting like poison on his tongue as he looked down at the fragile eight-year-old girl in his arms.
“It wasn't parenting, sir,” Clara whispered, tears overflowing her dark lashes. “It was systematic torture, graded by how long the child cried.”
Before anyone else could speak, Detective Miller’s phone buzzed aggressively in her coat pocket, vibrating with an urgent incoming transmission.

Miller pulled the device out, glanced at the glowing screen, and her face went completely pale as she read the new emergency alert.
