Chapter 11 - The Confession Room

The sterile interview room at the downtown federal precinct smelled faintly of cheap coffee and old paper, a stark contrast to the opulence of the Thornton estate.
Elena sat at the metal table in her red one-shoulder dress, her dark hair slightly disheveled, staring blankly at the two-way mirror across the room.
Agent Vance sat down opposite her, sliding a thick file folder across the scratched metallic surface without saying a single word.
Elena slowly raised her eyes, her expression cold and defiant despite the steel handcuffs binding her wrists to the bolt in the table.
“You can’t pin the brokerage syndicate on me,” Elena rasped, her voice lacking its usual sharp authority. “My legal team will pick apart your chain of custody in twenty-four hours.”
“Your legal team is currently sitting in the holding cell next door facing federal racketeering charges,” Agent Vance replied calmly, opening the file.
Elena flinched, her dark eyes darting toward the two-way mirror as if she could somehow see through the glass into the adjacent interrogation room.
“Richard wouldn't fold. He’s too smart for that,” Elena muttered, though her fingers began to twitch nervously against the metal table surface.
“Richard folded the second he realized his offshore accounts in the Caymans were frozen by federal injunction at midnight,” Vance stated smoothly.
He flipped open the file to reveal a printed transcript of a recorded phone call between Elena and an unidentified overseas buyer.
Elena stared at the transcript, her breath catching in her throat as she read her own exact words printed in stark black and white.
“This was private,” Elena whispered, her defiant facade finally cracking completely as the reality of her life sentence set in.
“In the digital age, Mrs. Thornton, nothing stays private when you leave a trail of broken lives and smart-home recordings behind,” Vance said.
Back at the Thornton estate, the morning sun began to peek through the dining room windows, casting a warm golden light across the polished floorboards.
David sat at the kitchen island nursing a cup of black coffee, while Clara quietly wiped down the counters with a fresh microfiber cloth.
Lily was still asleep upstairs in her pink bedroom, her door finally secured with a new, safe lock that only David and Clara could access.
“Mr. Thornton,” Clara said softly, pausing her cleaning to look across the marble island at her employer. “You should try to get some rest.”
“I can’t sleep, Clara,” David replied, his voice raspy and tired. “Every time I close my eyes, I see that security footage playing in my head.”
“It’s over now,” Clara reassured him gently, offering a small, comforting smile that reached her warm brown eyes.
Before David could respond, his cell phone buzzed loudly on the kitchen counter, displaying an incoming video call from Detective Miller.
David swiped the screen open immediately, his heart pounding against his ribs as Miller’s face appeared in high definition on the display.

“Mr. Thornton, you need to see this right now,” Miller said urgently, turning her tablet camera to face a secure computer monitor in the precinct.
